Removing front strut
#1

I'm in the process of replacing the front struts with Koni inserts.  Can't find a description of how to remove the top bolt on the strut (the one in the top of the strut tower).  Looks like one needs a large "allen" wrench to go in the hole in the center of the strut shaft to hold the shaft from turning and a box wrench to loosen the bolt? or is there a better way? Just using a socket the strut tends to move the entire strut and springs.

 update:

ok, should have looked harder in DIY, found the tips so please ignore my unnecessary question.

Hi AZ, yeah that part was a little tricky. Glad you got it sorted.

I think I used an O2 sensor socket plus a open end wrench that I literally ground down to sort of fit in at an angle. Silly PITA. Next time I gotta deal with these I will probably seek out a specialized tool.

Some have posted that it can be done by feel, but I'm not there yet.

I wouldn't admit to "sorted" just yet. Off to find the tool Sunday, the O2 sensor socket, maybe stop by a local shop. We need our own tool lending library!

O2 socket works fine, bit of an odd size key in the top of the leg,

Yes, I used a 22MM O2 socket (3/8 in drive) borrowed from Autozone and a 7MM hex (allen) drive to hold the strut shaft from spinning. Came off easy. Also used Flash's advice to drop the sway bar to let the strut clear the fender without needing a spring compressor, another simple process. Let's hope installation is as simple. Now cleaning the struts to cut them open and paint for the Koni insert. Hopefully tomorrow can finish the set up. Need to do some cleaning before reinstall, but this week should have wrapped up.
