Please with Racer-X chip
#1

Want to thank Bob and everyone else for their work on the chip shootout. I picked up a RacerX chip and finally got around to installing it and am pleased with the performance. The improvement in acceleration can be felt everywhere and coupled with the airbox mod this car is accelerating as it should have from the factory and no longer has a sluggish feel.

I read on another post that it should not be be used if you have an early DME but it is running great in my car. See pic of my DME version. Even with the 90+ degree heat today there was no pinging evident. Shipping was very quick from Speed-6.com. Overall a positive experience.

you do not have an early DME - you have the late one - that's why it works great - the early DME number is 0-261-200-074 - i have yet to see one - it looks like they changed it over fairly early in 92 - there was also another chip that came in some of the early cars with the late DME, but it's the DME that matters - you're fine

So, if I do have an early DME (Which I have a 91 built car), what would be a good chip? I have an autothority, and I guess it's fine, but if there's somethin better...

Should I consider finding a late dme to install? Curious. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

as i have told everybody who already has a chip from any of the major companies, there is not enough of a difference to justify a change from one chip to another

the only exception to that, is if you want to also raise your redline further - the autothority has a pretty early cutoff

the weltmeister for the early DME, IF it is programmed like the one for the later DME would go to 7700 - this would give you a bit more headroom and thus a bit more useable upper torque band - having never seen one though, i can't tell you if it is the same or not

again though, on the street, you won't see the difference

first things first - pull the floorboard, then lift he plate assembly out of there and find out what you have - the part number will be on the outside of the DME - most of the 92s were built in 91 - you would have to have one of the very first few cars (like the first 20 or so) to have the early DME - i'd love to figure out who has the changeover car

My sons bought me the Racer x chip and I look forward to installing it. I saw that the rev limit is raised to 7800. How high up does the 968 make power? What is considered to be the safe rev limit? I know the fuel cutoff is 6700. Is 7800 to allow other mods to take advantage of increased revs?

Thanks

Power drops off rapidly after about 7100, so you have to really be distracted to hit the rev limit at 7800.

The extra rev room is welcome especially in first and second gear. The valve float after that pretty much self limits the motor before it self destructs.

um - not sure you had the early DME - unless i am remembering wrong, we never did check that part number - not all 92s had it - from what i can tell, it was only the very first few, if any US cars (and it had nothing to do whith the hood badge, flat number thing) - so far, we have gone back as far as somethng like the 30th car, and still no early DME

I have the 29th coupe in the US market (NS820089) and it has the later ECU. In a conversation with Andrew Sweetenham (Promax), he gave me the following information:

"The ECU numbers for the 968 I have listed from Bosch are (with their corresponding ECU chip numbers):

0261 200 474 1267356645

0261 203 070 1267356782

0261 203 070 1267357459

Unfortunately, I don't have the Porsche parts numbers here to verify against yours. However, from the pictures, both of yours are type 0261 203 070. No

S2 ECU's were used on 968's as the 944S2 used an Air Flow Meter rather than an Air Mass Meter (or MAF). Both ECU types are very different."

I have the first 070 ECU using the stock 6782 chip. I'd love to find out the break from 474 to 070. What is your VIN?

Best wishes,

Buzz

lol - yeah - i gave andrew that info when i was trying to figure out on which ECU they developed their chip - (he initially had an incorrect number, which we later straightened out and found out they developed only on the later ECU and later chip)

as i said, to date, i have not heard of anyone having the early unit - it will be a very few cars, and could actually turn out to be only the "in house" ones - yours is in fact the first i've heard of with the other chip

i too would be interested to find the cutoff
