Stock chip OK with Airbox mod?
#1

I realize I'm late to the game, but I just installed a modded airbox and noticed a significant improvement in throttle without even removing the snorkel. I removed the snorkel on Pete's recommendation (and a re-read of Flashs article), and checked the DME box, and I have the stock chip (1 267 357 459) in my car.

Is this a workable arrangement for street, Or would I do well to buy the RS Barn chip, as I'm planning to?

Thanks

Stock chip will work, but performance chip will really enhance the experience, A LOT.

Speaking of chips what is the difference between the RS BARN chip # 1, chip# 2 and chip # 3.? Is it advisable to put the higher chips (#2&#3) into a street car?

A long time ago I inquired about the chips and was told #1 is for a street car with slight modifications . The next up was for header and exhaust and the next was head work and maybe a cam so track only.

Thanks, I'll place the order for the RS barn stage 1 chip

BTW, I checked last nite and the RS barn website does help clarify the differences between their chips

I just installed the stage 1 chip couple weeks ago and it was a noticible improvement over the other performance chip (wieltmeister) I had. Even without the yet to be done airbox mod.

RS Barn has/had a "trade-in" policy as you add modifications to your 968. Pete always kept a pretty close  eye on such things to make sure your chip matched the rest of your mods.

I have a pro max chip from PO, happy with that.

I googled for an article, that actually had DYNO charts with the same car, by Flash with promax, rsbarn and another chip I believe that I read a while back.  Can't find it now of course.

Good read to review, just like the airbox mod article.

I think the fault at the time with promax was triggering the emissions light.

Perhaps Flash can point to the article.

The  Speed 6 Racer X  chip and the RS Barn one should give you about the same performance in combination with the air box mod - the difference between the two is essentially insignificant .   Note however that the Speed 6 chip cut-off point is at about 7200 rpm ( I think...) , that's a very risky level to take your engine up to, I would be extremely cautious to make sure you shift before the factory indicated redline .. no matter if you're in the heat of the moment on the track and racing to squeeze that extra hundredth of a second out, or whatever other situation.. detonation in these cars is not a good thing..

actually, the speed 6 rev limit is at 7800, and that is indeed high for our valvetrain.

the rsbarn chip is down around 7200 ( i could check to be sure the next time i fire up that software)

the difference between the 2 in output numbers is minimal, with the rsbarn chip edging out the speed 6, but the rsbarn chip uses a lot less timing advance, reducing damage potential.

Are the Speed 6 chips still available? The only reference I found was to WWW.Speed-6.com, and link redirects to another site, which while entertaining, has nothing to do with auto parts.

IF I can find it, anyone here is more than welcome to have my ex - ( yikes that just sounds wrong somehow   )- Speed6 Racer X chip, since I have no use for it... the problem is I have no clue where I may have put it, and when it comes to garage clutter and disorganization, it's doubtful any of the forums members garages can even come close to the colossal mess that is mine.. :glare: .  It's surprising I can even locate the car in there .    But I can look for it and will  post if and when I might find it.

Cool, it sounds like a good next step for me. It has value and I have no problem paying for it.

I know, everything else in the house, and the yard, etc is meticulously arranged and organized ....except for the garage . Not sure why that is but it's always been the case. At some point I'll need an intervention and I may just hire a contractor to do a tear-down and rebuild it to a garage-mahal.

Btw, I looked around this afternoon, did not find the chip in any of the half dozen places I thought it may be, but will keep searching during this weekend ..

p.s. - guidance from " god " ? Lol, I'll look to someone more tangible for advice..like the Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus..

Funny. I have one room in the house that is messy. Everything else is meticulous. A place for everything and everything in its place.

Sorry, I searched all the shelves and boxes with car parts & tidbits but no trace of that chip anywhere. I know I'm going to stumble across it some day when I'm looking for something entirely different...always happens that way !
