Autothority Chip
#1

Having just bought my 968 two weekends ago I've focus most my time fixing the important things... these doorhandles are a pita... but anyway i final got to digging around in the box of goodies the PO had to go along with the car. To my surprise i found an unopened autothority chip. Im assuming it legit but want to find out more about this chip! I wasn't able to find much about it specifically so I figured I'd ask if anyone could educate me.

There is a reason it's not installed..(heh, heh, he said "stalled"...)

Seriously, there is more here about performance chips than you can imagine...take a look at RS Barn...

Yeah it didn't take me long to see Rs barn is the clear favorite, and i was probably going to buy one but wasn't sure how big of a noticeable difference there would be between it and the autothority i already have. I guess i should ask does anyone recommend NOT installing

there is nothing wrong with the autothority chips. they were designed by arguably the best guy in the aftermarket programming business, steve dinan.

as for any differences, well, one guy says he felt it at the bottom end. i don't know if it was a placebo thing or what. i have to look at the maps to see why he would have felt it, because when i looked at them before, there wasn't all that much difference. on the dyno, peak power difference was about 4hp, and it was less of a difference everywhere below that. it's possible that the rs barn mapping factors in a cat-back and the autothority does not, as there were no cat-back systems at the time the chip was made. i'm going to be looking at that as i put together my normally aspirated chip.

Going back to 2004, I bought my white 968. For about 2 years it pinged all the time - i just couldn't find out what was wrong. Tried everything. Finally, on a fluke, I discovered that it was an Autothority chip. Jay had a spare original chip that I swapped in its place and I had no more problems, I then later got the RS Barn ship and also had no problems. I still have that chip and if anyone wants it they can have it. I think that it was designed for 93 octane and the best I could get here was 91.

quite possibly the problem. i have run into a couple of chips that are set for higher octane. when i look at the maps again, i will be looking at the timing maps to see if there is too much advance for 91. however, the ECU should have pulled back the timing when it saw a problem. i suspect there was something else going on, such as a bad knock sensor, that resulted in the ECU not pulling back timing. hard to tell from here. the guy who did the tuning for rs barn did not like to work on the ignition timing, and instead chose to manipulate the fuel, so it makes total sense that it did not cause issues.

Got the chip in and did the intake mod and all i can say is wow.. First of all I instantly noticed how much cleaner my car idles even with the a/c on full blast(my car has died on me a couple times because a/c was on). Secondly shifting gears is much smoother. Before I was having trouble getting non jerky shifts. Performance wise there is a noticeably difference in the way the car accelerates, it seems to be a much more evened out "pull" rather than the big boost around 4k rpms. Also the higher rev limiter is nice! Not exactly sure where it is as i shifted at the point the stock chip would have maxed out. Now for the intake, I love being able to hear that thing suck the air in, I'd do the mod even if it didn't affect performance lol

funny stuff. glad you're having fun. be aware that in cold areas, in the dead of winter, the airbox mod may require a touch of warming up before taking off in the morning. it gets much colder air than the OEM location, and that may be too cold until the engine warms up a tad. experiment and see. it hasn't happened a lot, but it has happened.
