powerhaus chip
#1

I was told by my cars PO, that he had his PM install a powerhaus chip as well as a K+N air filter. I have tried to find info relafed tothis brand of chip, and have drawn a blank. Has anyone ever heard of this type of chip and how does it compare to a RS Barn sfage 1 chip? Thanks!

heard of it. tested 1 back when i was doing the chip shootout. it failed immediately and threw a code. made a whopping 7hp too. nothing like their claims, which were never supported by any sort of documentation.

Thanks again! Gona go with the RS Barn chip and see how much better it is. Hopefully I'll notice a bit of improvement in performance.

make sure you choose the right one. one is for stock exhaust header (cat backs are fine). the other is for the 4 to 1 header.

Stage 1 for stock and stage 2 for 4:1 header, correct? Did you check hp and torque gains when you did you chip testing, Flash? I know you said 7hp with the powerhaus. It seems that the stage 1 would bring a fairly nice bang for the buck. A stage 2 with a header is quite a bit more costly and I'm wondering how much more performance it would bring? I'm pretty sure you have the objective data to make an educated decision. Thanks!

the stage 2 chip is to be used with the 4 to 1 stahl header that rs barn sold.

the stage 1 is for all other applications, regardless of cat-back, intake, etc

don't be fooled by misreading anecdotal information. the header doesn't really make that much more power. what it does is allow the other mods to be maximized at the top end, however not without compromise. it exhibited behavior much like a turbo in that there was a "lag" or sense of "flatness" at the bottom, and then more of a "rush" at the top. also, i did not like the kazoo-like sound of the header.

that being said, there are those who really like the header. i did not, and i have now found other ways to get almost the same increases, without spending that much money. i just haven't gone to the dyno to show it, nor have i written the DIY for it yet. i need a "donor" car, with an owner willing to foot the bill for the dyno time, before i can do that. it's a pretty daunting project, as i would also need a header, since i sold mine a long time ago. so, it's likely never to happen.

back on the subject of the chip though, the stage 1 chip does a nice job. i've looked at the maps, and i see some areas for improvement, but i don't know that the dyno time would be justified by any useable or noticeable gains. it's probably the best one on the market right now.

I did not know that my car already had an aftermarket chip until I went in to replace it with the RS Barn stage 1 chip. Based on my butt-o-meter testing, I can say I definitely prefer the RSB to the Autothority chip that I replaced.

interesting. the mapping is nearly identical in most areas. there is a difference in power, but i am surprised you felt it, as it is only about a 4hp increase at peak, and less increase everywhere else. an increase is an increase though. as i said, it does appear to be the best one on the market today.

RS Barn continued to develop the chip over time, particularly with regard to partial throttle maps. I'm sure the stage 1 chip today is slightly better than the one from 5 years ago. It definitely works better with the air box mod.

yup - pretty sure i have the latest version here (i've picked up quite a few chips over the last couple of years). someday i'll sell them all off. depends on whether or not i take all of the information i've gathered from other chips, and make my own, using the best results of all of them. it all comes down to having time. i've come up with quite a few things that should result in about 35hp to a normally aspirated engine, without having to break the bank. my main problem right now is not having a stock car to play with.

If only I weren't on the other side of the country. I'd be happy with another 35hp without breaking the bank! Seems like some dyno time would be a small price to pay. Maybe a west coast member might get the urge for some more hp?

If a stock car were to become available, roughly how long do you think you'd need to have it available? There may be a period of time when I'm working out of the country and my car available. It is stock except for the air box mod.

since i have already done everything i want to do, just not at the same time, i would only need it for a couple of weeks, but i am nowhere near able to get onto that right now. i'm slammed for the next couple of months at a minimum.

Just let me know when the time comes and we'll see. I'm looking at a potential job change. If that happens and I go back to a daily commute, I will probably make the 968 a weekend car and buy a commute vehicle in which case the 968 is potentially available for as long as required.

My observation regarding the RSB vs. Autothority is completely unscientific, but I just felt that the power delivery was smoother with the RSB, particularly in the lower RPM range. The Autothority seemed to "take off" after getting to higher RPMs, but the RSB seemed to pull stronger across the whole range -- more linear. Again, very unscientific. I did the airbox mod while the autothority was still in there, so that is non-differential.

i'll go back and look at the maps and see what each did at the bottom and see if i can figure out what it was.

each chip does things a bit differently, and each one has something better than another. my idea is to find the best of all worlds there, and put it all in one chip. of course there are also a couple of other things to be done to maximize that. i have a pretty solid plan at this point, and just need to put it together and test it to show the gains. i'm pretty confident though, given how much time i have now spent on these things.

So I purchased a RS Barn stage 1 chip and installed it today. To my suprise, the other chip was an AutoThority chip and not a powerhaus chip. I have not driven the car yet, but I'm curious about the difference in the Hp and torque. Can anybody weigh in on the difference between the two? I would think Flash may have some insight for me??? Btw, this is just a baby step until that D1R upgrade comes out! Ha! Slip sliding away.

Ooops! Re-read this thread and it seems my question has already been answered, in the form of a 4hp gain. Any additional insight is welcome though.

Ernie,

The additional insight I can offer is that RSB put a lot of time into the partial throttle maps. Most chips are tuned for WOT...Pete put a lot of time into tuning for as many conditions as possible (my memory is failing but I believe there were over 100 partial throttle maps, I wouldn't be surprised if it was nearer to 200).
