Performance Chips
#21

Hello,

What these chips give with european gasoline?

We have here RON95 and 98.

968 originally designed to run with with 98 octane level I think.

Therefore I don't see how you can run in USA with only 91 RON...

Any explanation?

Thanks

Nico

Most of us in the states get 93 octane which is roughly 98 RON, as far as I know California is the only one limited to 91 octane which is roughly equivalent to 95 RON. Even in California they can mix in race gas to get octane up.

ROW chips are different from NA chips which is why Promax has different chips for the US. I believe there are few UK guys running RSBarn chips with no issue.

91 ron+mon/2 (as we measure it in the states) is about 93 ron

93 ron+mon/2 is about 95 ron

95 ron+mon/2 is about 98 ron

yes, we are indeed screwed here in california and have to mix the over $7/gal 100 octane to get up to the 93 that most chips want

when i was driving the car home through texas though, there was a stretch where the best i could get was 89

the explanation given by promax is that the promax chips ran richer down low, and had to be leaned out and cleaned up to get past the emissions setup the US cars have that the ROW cars do not

So I understand using RSBarn Stage1 chip for instance won't be an issue with RON98 in Europe.

Thanks for explanations

Nico

PS: Used french car have also to pass an emision test every 2 years (once they are older than 4 years). But this test is less severe with cars before 1993 (hopefully, mine is end of 1991). The raison is after 1993, catalytic exhaust were mandatory for new cars.

PPS: Someone to help in the technical section for my door handle? :-)

89? ouch! I can feel the difference between 91 and 94, I can't imagine what 89 must feel like.

let's just say that i was very careful not to rev very high - she'll run down to 90, and i had a half tank of 93 in there at the time, but i wasn't taking any chances - it was my first day wiht the car after all, and i was already running on a funky DME relay, and had just left the trooper who had pulled me over at 150 - i figured my luck was getting pretty thin

Within the past year I did the airbox mod and installed a chip ( RS Barn Stage 1)

I felt a good increase in how the car pulls and gathers speed after the airbox mod.

After installing the chip, which I did after the airbox mod, I didn't feel much except

that the flat spot around 4,100 RPM was almost totally gone. I thought I would feel

more gain, and maybe it's there, but without dyno testing date, I can't say for sure.

I'm not trying to be negative about the product, just reporting personal results.

I admit that my evaluation is not "scientific", and hesitated about putting up this post.

Just want to report my experience and ask for comments from the gallery.

What say ye? Anyone else have the RS Barn Stage 1 chip with airbox mod?

Thanks for posting responses. -Scott

this is where the cumulative effect is not what we would wish for - whether you did the box mod first, or the chip first, the second one only gives you about half of what it does independently

also, it is more of a time thing than a feel thing - compare accelleration times and you should see more than the butt feels

that being said, if something is amiss, or the engine is tired, you might not see much at all - have you done a blink test to make sure that the variocam and O2 sensor are operating properly? is compression up to snuff (over 180)?

I have absolute Dyno proven results of the increase in horsepower and torque on my own car. The change is remarkable.

I would never publish those results without RS Barn's permisson, and I have no doubt that the permission will never be granted due to some unscrupulous members of this communities efforts to hamper/hurt/hinder RS Barn's solid effort.

Take this on my honor or do the testing yourself...any chip will make your car perform better..RS Barn is the best!

Jay

Your dyno's no good anyway since it's from one of the slow colors. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Car tested was the same color for all runs...car was prepared with the same wax and dust was removed using Mother's show shine between runs so that gloss factor would not change. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Flash: with 55K on the clock, could the motor be "tired", or are there other factors besides mileage

at work? I have not done the "blink" test and would test the car in any way shape or form if

it revealed some maladjustment or other problem. I'll check compression, that's easy, but know

nothing of the "blink". What/how is that done?

Claudia II is no garage queen. She's out every day for about 15 miles of fresh air and

exercise on my daily commute. Has been that way for almost 2 years.

Jay: thanks for the response, and solid endorsement of the chip. It definately did not

slow my car down, for sure. I would like to think that what I

bought is the best, and it's encouraging to hear about your positive experience with RS Barn

and the chip. Cool... Is your airbox modded as well? Where did you have the dyno testing done?

probably not tired - could be a sensor out of whack though or something like that telling the computer something inaccurate - this would affect how much the chip does

i keep forgetting this, and somebody correct me if i'm wrong, but the blink test is:

with key off hold down gas pedal

while holding pedal down, turn key to on position but do not start car

when "check engine" light starts blinking, release pedal

count blinks of light - look for pauses

then compare to list of fault codes in workshop manual

the only thing is you forgot to step down the gas to the floor to read the next code (if there is one, other wise the same code repeats)

Wow, THAT's the blink test?! I always thought you needed to hook up some special device to the computer and get IT to blink for you. Geez, had I known that I would have tried this out a long time ago <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Well then, I think I know what I'm doing this week! Woot!

yup - pretty simple - cool, huh?

i think somebody needs to post this in either the "something every 968 owner should know" section or the technical section, or both

they should include a list of the fault codes though, including the "intermitent" versus "constant" prefix
