Racer X performance chip question
#1

Hey, first post here. Rennlist veteran.

I read the chip article in 9 Mag and while I thought it had a lot of good info, I think it lacked telling me if the Racer X chip gave performance gains to the modified 968. It spoke of large gains to the stock 968, with 14.5 hp and 7.8 ft/lb above stock numbers. But it didn't detail the gains to the 968 with the "free flowing" modified exhaust setup. I ask this because I have a free-flowing exhaust, to say the least.

Personally, I'm not to concerned with low end power as I am with mid and high. I have a 3" resonator with the SFR 3" cat back (resonator in place of cat). I love this setup, that while I get 944 guys telling me the backpressure isn't right (and they are probably right), the high end seems to scream and the car is very quick.

I'm wondering if this Racer X chip will do anything for me with my exhaust setup, or will I be wasting my time.

Thanks,

Matt O.

yeah - sorry - no real way to do that - you would have to test that yourself - i specifically did not test on modified stuff because there are just too many variables - the questions would have been endless - also, the point was to determine which chip was best for a street car, and so far, no positive results have been documented on any exhaust systems

you should see gains with the chip, but i can't say how much - i did test on my setup (which is more free-flowing too) and i saw similar gains - i'm looking forward to seeing how it goes withe the new system design which adds back the much needed back pressure

on that note, the 944 guys are right - the 3" is way too big - that is something for a turbo - torque drop is most certain, likely in the neighborhood of 10-20 lb/ft, and mostly in the lows and mids - you may have gained a couple of horsepower up at 6k or so, and gotten some throttle response though - we are playing around with this problem right now, and seen some very interesting stuff so far - you would be stunned at how easily it gets screwed up - apparantly, it has a lot to do with the intake manifold design, and the timing of the resonant pulse

feel free to email me, and i will be happy to go over this more with you offline

Yeah, I know I'm losing torque down low with 3". Originally purchased the 3" because was planning on forced induction in the future and didn't want to have to get a new exhaust. Plus, the damn thing sounds mean as heck.

Seriously though, I'm interested. I'll email you.

To anyone reading -- if anyone has a Racer X 968 chip they wouldn't mind loaning me for a very short period of time, just so I can take it down to the dyno and see any gains, I will pay shipping both ways and insure it. I am trustworthy (been on Rennlist for 8 years (since 1997 with my first '87 924S), own/operate P-CarOnline.com, all around trustworthy guy), and would appreciate the help. I'd rather not purchase a $160 item if there are no gains. Money doesn't grow on trees.
