Performance Chips
#1

I realized that there needs to be an executive summary on chips. We need to separate the wheat from the chaff , so to speak because there has been many, many pages of, well lets just say, discussion on the matter, and how could a new 968 enthusiast possibly determine the final outcome by searching the archives?

9-Magazine performed a shootout among the contenders. This was as scientific a test as there ever was, and likely ever will be. The bottom line:

About 14 HP gain. Good midrange torque boost too. A no brainer upgrade that will pass any states smog check program.

The Racer-X from Speed-6 was the overall winner.

The Promax was a close second, and for all intents, the same as the Racer-X in terms of seat of the pants feel, while losing a few HP to the Racer-X above 6000 RPM. The Promax does offer a couple of variants that have a different redline fuel cut - 7100 and 7700 RPM

So there it is. Pick your poison, but you definitely can't go wrong with either.

Thanks, Greimann, for sharing this update. It's hard to believe that there's that much HP gain but I'm not complaining.

Well said! The whole story in very few words. I've got my Promax and the supplies to change the air induction. Now, I just got to find the time to do it.

good deal - i presume you went with the 7100 chip - you'll enjoy it - for those who don't want to push their cars, or aren't after every last bit, it's a good compromise - my buddy ron, is a perfect example of the perfect candidate for that chip - he loves it

Wow! This is certainly cheap HP. But do these chips increase the fuel octane requirment over stock?

the chips we tested don't increase the octane requirements, but most of the chips were developed on 92 and 93 (measured RON+MON/2)

we tested on 91, because that is what is available here, and since the car won't run properly below 90 (according to the manual), it made sense

we did also did some testing on 93 in the first go around, and the results were in line with what we saw on 91 - no chip swapped places or passed another when bumping octane (no, i'm not posting those charts - no way am i getting into another one of those discussions again)

while a minimal increase, maximum power seems to be reached at around 93

Do you have the charts for the A/F ratio for either the Speed 6 or Promax? The reason that I ask is that I'm interested in a chip but my car tends to run lean to begin with and I don't want it to run any leaner. How much of the improvement with this chip is due to leaning the mixture versus changing the timing?

All we need now is for Pete at RS Barn to throw his data in and it all starts again. Still, its nice to have a final place to get all the info. Nice!

may happen eventually, but he probably isn't going to do it until he tests on something that reads like what people are used to seeing, and he can post something that explains how to read charts - too many people just don't know how to read the data, and consequently arguments start - he's happy to talk to you one on one though

i do know he got the same kinds of resultant comparisons i did

but, it will be nice to see the definitive info in one place

Hi, does someone still have this file, 'cause the link doesn't work anymore?

I am just curious about these chips. I never had any of my cars chipped (had a couple of Imprezas, etc), though on my bikes (Ducati, Aprilia), I always changed the ECU.

Now that I have bought a 968 cs I wonder if it makes sense for daily use (i.e. I am not solely interested in power gains, but also efficiency, reliability, etc.).

any advice appreciated

thanks

I put a ProMax chip in my 968 about a year ago and am very satisfied. I had the car tested on a dyno before and after (eight minutes apart!) and the chip added 11.5 hp and 11.5 ft-lbs of torque. The difference can be felt and the car is a little easier in traffic, as there's less feathering of the clutch to get underway. The thing that really surprised me is that gas mileage seems to be up slightly. I check gas mileage with every fillup and it looks to be increased by about 1 mpg with the chip. I've had the chip in for a year and can see no reason to suspect logevity issues.

I'm not saying that the ProMax chip is the best or anything like that, just that I'm satisfied with it. For what chips cost today (around $150), there's no reason not to do it.

I wrote up my chip swap for Excellence magazine and it was published in the May 2006 issue on page 145. The article includes the dyno chart.

Good luck!

Yeah, I'd also like to see the RS Barn chip thrown into the mix

I finally got my in and I am impressed. Also, did the air induction at the same time. I can really tell the differents. My mechanic was also impressed with the the change.

Thanks for the pointers guys, I have just ordered a Promax 7100R. My CS has had a bit of intake work done (Nothing like the 4-hole mod described here, but definitely less restrictive than standard), and it's always been a bit difficult to get off the line smoothly. Hoping the Promax fills the gap
