3rd Annual Ortega Highway Fun Run and BBQ
#21

Dan, pretty uneventful except for a major accident which
caused a detour.

We had good weather, not too hot, and not much traffic.
A relatively small turnout of about 8 cars.

Nice roads, I had never done this route before. A nice
lunch of burgers, and a great pasta salad. I had never
tried Newcastle Ale beer. I tipically drink the German
style lagers or Czech Pilsner. The Newcastle is a very
good beer. I was impressed.

Again, thanks to Bob and Ayn for their hospitality.

From the lack of any serious descriptions of the event, and the paucity of photographic evidence, I've concluded that there really wasn't such a run...and that the rest of us are being made victims of a ruse, a la Capricorn One. After all, we know that Bob has extraordinary technical skills, so...

lol - i spent the weekend away for the site - sorry guys - as everybody knows, i'm horrible at remembering to take pics - however, i did snap a few

the event went off without a hitch - jared and brian popped down friday night and crashed here - travis showed up in the morning - we were up at o-dark-thirty and the guys were out prepping their cars before the sun came up

at 6:15 we were off to coffee and cars - most of the guys showed up at the appointed hour, but it took a while for everybody to get there - we were supposed to have 11, but 2 went down with mechanical issues, and one was just a no-show (to be fair he was a "maybe" anyway) - here there are beginning to assemble - we never did actually have all of the cars together for a shot at coffee and cars, as one had to leave and come back, and another had to leave before the first one got back

we did have one completely random attendee though - he knew nothing about the event, and just showed up coincidentally - a very rare car too - an early 93

as every weekend at coffee and cars, a couple of interesting cars showed up (not 968s)

then it was off on the run - we had 8 cars on the run - the first leg of the route was clear, and we only got bogged down on the downhill - i was taking it pretty easy at this point, as i had not slept at all, and was on vicodin and flexiril for a persistent headache that has now lasted 3 weeks, and wasn't sure i was totally focused - the road was smooth, the weather was great, and the scenery was amazing - the views along orgtega highway are breathtaking - i am hoping somebody snapped some shots, but i had my hands full, and we did not stop

then it was off to the second leg - even though everybody had turn by turn instructions, complete with segment distances, we still managed to lose a couple of guys - we pulled off and waited for them - finally regrouping, we took off into the outskirts or riverside - the winding roads provided some interesting driving until we got stuck behind two 4x4s - one of us decided that was not acceptable, and made some "interesting" moves to get around them - seeing them come from behind me, by me and then watching them go around the trucks was jaw-dropping - no hesitation whatsoever - very nervy

we arrived at the stopping point and all harassed him, while in the back of our minds wishing we had done it too

after a quick break, we were then off for the final leg - just as we got started, we slammed into ridiculous traffic due to an accident on the road - we pulled off and one of the guys worked out a re-route - we still sat in traffic for 45 minutes in 95 degree heat, but we did get around the accident - i was just about to pull off and put the top up when we finally got clear - back on the road, we made it to the last leg - this was the part i had been saving up for last

the first 10 miles or so was gradual sweeping canyon road - we were cooking along well until we got behind two harleys that were stuck on stupid and deliberately blocking us - i finally got an opportunity to pass at a turn, and blasted past them (not unlike the aformentioned pass) - we were then off and onto one of the best windy roads i've seen - it is like they designed it just for this car - one turn after another - balancing the car through the turns is the key on this one - if you get the weight transfer into the right rhythm, you can really scoot through - i was again not pushing too hard, as i still didn't feel 100%, but still it was a good clip, and everybody seemed to really enjoy it, many commenting on it when we were done

at about 12:30 we rolled into my place - i got busy on the bbq while everybody started swapping stories about the day - all in all, it was a great event, and we all started talking about the next one

Bob,

Thank you for putting this even together. I know it takes a lot of time and planning and with the detail you put into everything, I'm sure it takes you even longer . Below are a couple of pics I snapped with my phone. Like Bob, I'm always forget to take pictures. I did manage to get the small video clip on the way back that rxter posted.

Thanks to Ayn and you for opening up your home and providing an awesome lunch! It was great to meet new people, talk cars and see a bunch of 968's together.

Waiting for everyone to catch up... No, there wasn't a Highway Patrol at the end of the line!

Jared's Lapis blue - What a great color combo on his car!

Ortega Highway is always a great place to go. The drive is great (and the views are incredible) when there isn't much traffic but the best part was the last road. As Bob mentioned, it's like it was made for some hard driving. However, we did notice the 35mph speed limit and we all did our best to stay around there... pretty much

Unfortunately I had to skip out after the grillin' so I missed the talk about the next get together. But, put me down for it!

lol - that is my favorite for sure - that particular car is a kit - it is a tube frame fiberglass body with a 289 in it - it is for sale on ebay - unfortunately it is an automatic - it was made by the company that took over after ferrari put Modena out of business - Modena was the company that made the car for ferris bueler's day off, and was based on an MGB chassis

i want one of those MGB based cars

Other than the traffic, the weather was awesome and the food just as good. It was great to meet Travis and see everyone else again (Tom, Brian, Chris, Eric, Joe and Bob). The last canyon run is amazing and Bob is totally right, the undulating twisties are mesmerizing and really let you know how well your car is set up. For me, too much body roll so I will have to look into some suspension upgrades. Thanks again for a great weekend!

lol - happy to have done it - Flash Hotel - too funny - we've been toying with the idea of a guest book, now that the "Guest Suite" is nearly like a B&B - we forgot to put the little mints on the pillow though - bad host

hopefully Jose (the purple car) will start hanging out here more and get more involved - nice guy - very rare car - purple on purple, M030, and headlight washers

Hey who owns the White Cab w/blue top?
Car looks lowered, how far and what size tire/wheel combination?

Very clean.

that is eric (rustech) - it is very lowered (actually a little beyond what we have determined is optimal for maximum handling) but he likes it, and it does look cool - i think he is at about 622mm

the wheels are sport classic 2, i think 8 and 10 - heavy, but very pretty - i believe he has 235 up front and 265 rear

he definitely uses every bit of what is going on with that car - always interesting to watch

Agreed - too low to be practical, maybe split the difference.

well, at the risk of getting off topic here, there is practical and there is too low for the best handling - i am still too low for practical at 631 and i think about 3mm below what seems to be the minimum ride height for the best suspension geometry - i just haven't gotten in there to really measure it and draw it out fully to be sure, and then adjust it - i had it lower, and found a definite improvement when i brought it up a bit - you didn't notice it at low speeds, but you sure did at high ones

There were 2 of us as I recall. Me in my stock clunker and someone else in a lowered hot rod

Pretty sure we had a better view of the full road ahead. The topography at that location gave us more of a bird's eye view at the back of the train than you had at the front. I do love the fast sweepers - maybe a bit too much. Anyway what a blast. Biggest problem for me is to recompress to the daily commute. Monday and Tuesday after an event always require a fair amount of discipline.

Not to sidetrack the topic at hand, but I believe the purple M030 coupe owned by Jose was the first 968 I was potentially going to look at. Hopefully Jose will chime in. IIRC, the car was owned by a guy named Terry Crandle (not sure if I have the spelling right) who then sold it to another guy (can't remember his name, but it was not Jose). It would be interesting, for me at least, to verify if this was the car. Sure sounds like it - amethyst/magenta, M030, sport classic wheels, sport seats, etc. I may still have a copy of the COA which Terry emailed to me way back when.

Oh, and for what it is worth, would still love to have the car!!!!
