ok - it's official

3rd Annual Ortega Highway Fun Run and BBQ
Saturday August 1st

if you have not done this run, this ain't no 25 minute pca putt putt run - this is not for sissies, so strap in and hang on - we are NOT racing, but you are on your own to keep up - route guides will be provided and we will have a stop at about the halfway point so people can catch up

i have new stuff in store for you again this year, so this will again be a lot of fun

before anybody asks, yes i confirmed that the Coffee and Cars event is unchanged - the building was indeed sold, but ford took out a 10 year lease on it, so it's same as it ever was - the cafeteria will be closed for remodeling, but there will be some food and coffee there (and restrooms too)

we will have a special designated area for our group to park - please contact me if you are going to make it so i have a good head count for spot reservation

we will start off at the first rendezvous point at 6:30am at the Coffee and Cars event in Irvine at:
One Premier Place
Irvine, CA 92618
from HWY 5, exit at Alton Pkwy and head West
right turn at Gateway
go to the end of the road and look for the cars - someone who will direct you to us

NOTE: be gassed up and ready BEFORE you get to Coffee and Cars - we will not be stopping or waiting for people to get it together - there is a shell station across the freeway from the event - it is on the left side of the road on Alton Pkwy

after leaving there at 9am we will head out for our run - it will be a circuitous route along some of the nicest canyons orange county has to offer

we will stop at approximately the halfway point to visit a restroom, let the stragglers catch up, yada yada

then it's on to the final leg of the run - this is the fast one - the last 20 miles or so are a blast, sure to make you fall in love with your car all over again

we should arrive at my house about noon, where we will begin the BBQ and debauchery

i do have some rooms here at the house, so for those coming from afar, you are welcome to crash here friday night - please contact me via email asap if you need one

you are welcome to bring beer for the BBQ (newcastle or pacifico are the house favorites) - we have everything else - if you choose to do that, and are not starting off at my house, i would recommend stopping at the ralph's at the corner near my house after the fun run, as it would be quite warm and shaken by the time it got here if you were to drag it around with you

if you have any questions, or need directions to my house, please email me

please rsvp

we look forward to seeing you
i've gotten a few rsvps, but as we are now just about 2 weeks away, i'd like to get a better head count so i can make the appropriate arrangements

i'd also like to know how many will be crashing here friday night
by the way, i think we are up to 6 so far
I went out for a short drive this weekend, just
20 miles r/t. It was 100 degrees and uncomfortable.
I don't see a cooling trend any time soon.

Is this still a go?
yup - i know we are in a heat wave right now, but when i looked it up, it said that historically it was 78 here on that day
i just checked weather.com again and it is still showing it considerably cooler on the 1st than it is now
weather predictions still holding - peak of 82 here, but that isn't until almost 4pm and we'll be done before that

have added a couple more guys - now looks like 9 so far

corrected the street name on the directions to Cars and Coffee - Gateway not Enterprise
just 3 more days to go - everything looks good - weather is cooperating - i ran the route today at about the same time we will be running - the highest it got was just over 90, and that was only for a minute, way out in riverside - mostly low 80s across the entire route, same as here - the roads are mostly in great shape - construction all finished on ortega hwy - much nicer than last year

remember to fill up BEFORE you get to Cars and Coffee

remember to bring $2.50 or your FasTrak with you - we will be taking a toll road on the run

bring your radar detector
<-------------- Jealous.
I don't own a radar detector.
lol - no worries tom - i was just saying if you've got one, this is a good day for it

Ride behind someone with one and watch for their braking.
well, that won't help since i don't generally step on the brakes when it goes off - if i have to slow down, i downshift - brake lights and nose dive are a dead giveaway

in my mgb, i used to have a kill switch on the brake lights - i may install one on this car too

Sorry if this is going OT, but I've had that discussion with people before....

does it matter if your nose dives and you hit your brakes? If the radar shows 47 in a 45.... In court, the officer can not speculate what your speed was. The only evidence admissible (as far as I know) is the radar - and then there's the whole issue of whether or not the gun was calibrated correctly, allowing for a +/-2 MPH differential, yadda yadda yadda...

actually, the officer is considered an expert witness, and in most courts his observations are admitted as evidence and given just as much weight as radar - you would also be surprised at how good they are at estimating your speed based solely on a visual

there are basic guidelines of what they do to gather evidence on you (pacing, radar, etc), but they are not legal requirements - he can nail you based on just seeing you - obviously 47 in a 45 would be silly, and empirical data would be necessary to convict, but if you were doing 100 in a 45, he could just say you were doing 50, still give you a ticket, and you would be hard pressed to get out of it

that being said, i have beaten a LOT of speeding tickets by tearing down the officer's testimony

legal tip for the day - rule #1 when going to traffic court: DO NOT give testimony yourself - it opens the door for self incrimination - present evidence, question the officer, challenge his record, challenge the facts, but under no circumstances should you "tell your story"

now - back on topic - day after tomorrow - looking good - it has been cooling off here - i'm gathering the prizes for the gimmick rally / quiz today and giving the car a once over
we might be up to 11 cars now
can you post the route? Id like to enter some way points into the Garmin.

Tx.
