I'd like to replace my door speakers because the mid driver had foam surrounds which are now dry-rotted.
I couldn't find a suitable replacement other than the OE Nokia, and these are at least $51 plus shipping (just got a quote from Sunset yesterday).
I can't imagine that anyone with the 10 speaker set-up still has a good mid driver. The woffer is OK, since it has a rubber surround, and the tweeter seems OK too.
Since the OE replacement is not cheap, the power rating on the OE set-up is unknown, and because I have added an amp which is likely to damage the OE speakers even if I fix them, I'm in the market for something new and better.
The issue I have with replacements is the size of the OE tweeter. The hole is 2.5" to 3" across (I have the exact measurement somewhere). This seems to be much larger than anything else out there.
So the options seem to be:
1) find a replacement that will fit the hole
2) make a mounting fixture of some kind to cover the hole and mount the new tweeter
3) remove the innerds of the OE tweeter and somehow insert the new tweeter (there is a post somewhere on this forum that describes this approach)
4) leave the existing tweeter in place and connect it to the new speaker crossover.
My preference is option 1, but have not been able to identify a speaker that will fit.
Option 4 might work, but I have concerns about whether it will work with the new crossover due to the impedence (OE is 8 ohms, new speakers don't ever tell you what the impedence of just the tweeter is), the senstitivity SPL (this by itself could be addressed with equalization if it's close), and the power handling (I don't want to get it all set up and then blow out the tweeter and have to start over).
Any suggestions?
I've searched this forum pretty thoroughly to find a good solution, but haven't found the answer yet.
RPM, what did you put in the front of your car?
