you can actually get good clean sound out of the stock speakers - they aren't the fall down spot

email me and i will be happy to explain

I replaced the stock door and rear speakers with nice Infinity Kappas, and am only mildly happy with the result. Increased 'loudness' over stock, but not better sounding. I might have to drive to CA just to have Bob help me figure out why my car sounds so crappy

I just order all new stock replacements (upper tweter and mids below-6 total) through Sunset for less than $200. Took a month to get in. What was left of my original sounded good. I predict these will sound great. I will let you know how it goes. I noticed Crutchfield just started carrying the blaupunkt low-profiles speakers, but did not see the smaller size. but they did have the 5.25s. This is a first I've seen.

When I bought my coupe the stereo had been changed out to a Eclipse head unit with a tape deck (cassette ? in 2005? why?) Factory speakers still installed (6)

I changed everything but the rear deck speakers in my coupe.

The Head unit was changed out to a Nakamichi CD400 unit with ~47 watts per channel and a subwoofer output, $279. Added a Hifonics 400watt amp $110 for the subwoofer installed in a custom foamed box in RR fender cubby. 4 hours of(PITA). Subwoofer is a Imaged Dynamics double voice coil 2 ohm 8". WOW! 8" subwoofer really pounds for a little speaker, nothing but praise for the little fellow. Ebay $79

Front speakers fit perfectly in the door's 5.25 location, MB Quart RKB130 coaxial with external crossovers. Ebay sourced 'em for $26 . Factory tweetes still in doors. Total cost of the killer system <$500. ( I had the wiring for the amp already and the wood for the sub box) With Flashes help it might approch the sound quality in his cab. , OK maybe not. But I'll bet it's close. Subwoofer is REALLY needed as it fills in the lost bottom end. World of difference without it.

As to the quality of the original speakers.....they are good for factory units but cannot compare with the MB Quart aftermarkets. I installed only 1 MB Q and did a sound test to compare the two. SPL from the factory was much greater than the MB Qs, but the SQ was not the same. Once I put some juice (watts) to the MB Quarts they began to shine, they are power hungry speakers. I don't think a deck pushing out less than 35watts is going to make them happy. Recommended wattage for them is 40 - 100 watts! Yep, they are loud! So is the subwoofer and at those SPL levels your hearing can start to get damaged. No distortion. That ought to be good enough for anybody 'cept Flash.

here's the deal on the factory speakers - it's not so much the quality of the speakers as it is the preset EQ pattern with which they are built - each car speaker is designed to reproduce certain frequencies in anticipation of specific needs - these were designed as a set - the larger speaker was not designed to be used without its matching tweeter

as an example, i have infinity reference speakers in the doors, but am still using the factory tweeters - this meant i had to program a different EQ pattern to accommodate the different speaker

if you have a 5 band parametric equalizer, and use it correctly, you can absolutely get stunning sound out of the factory speakers - that is not to say that aftermarket stuff can't sound better, and i have them, but in a car that is moving, you will be hard pressed to hear the difference

sub is a different story - it takes a lot of work, and a change in the rear to get sub out of the rear speakers, but it can be done - a seperate sub is easier for sure - cabs have no choice but to go with a seperate sub

the first thing anyone should do though, before they go ripping out their speakers expecting dramatic change, is to make sure they have a good head unit with a parametric eq - a graphic eq, or worse mere bass and treble controls (like in the stock decks), is not going to do the job - you will be wasting your money by buying speakers - the improvement will be minor by comparison

I have a minidisc player that i am planning on putting in. I would like to put three way speakers in the door. mid bass, bass and high. The middle of the door.. of newer 968 have a speaker below the tweeter. What size is that. My car does not have that speaker.. it is in the lower arm rest. Also behind the seat is there a customer box that can hold a sub instead of the storage area. My mini disc player has a eq in it. Just looking for clean loader sound with the top down going 60ish or faster

Agree, a good head unit makes a BIG difference.

So do quality speakers. Liken it to a fast car with good brakes and bald tires.

The entire system should be considered and designed as a whole, not soley by one individule part expecting astronomical differences.

i would not add the midrange speaker - the mids in this car are already too hot - adding more would only exacerbate the problem - i've heard the setup - drove me nuts - very honky sounding - the image was wrong too - also, adding a mid would then require a complete crossover change, thereby requiring additional amplification - this is not a step to be taken lightly

i'm not suggesting that better speakers don't help - they will - they should just be the last step, and not the first, in upgrading a system - start with the deck - then go to power - then go to sub - then go to speakers - along the way, play with crossover - i got a huge improvement by capping the speakers in the doors and in the rear

if i were to place things on a scale, a good head unit would give you say a 100% improvement, whereas replacing the speakers might give you 25% (not counting a sub, which makes all the difference in the world, and probably good for 80%)

speakers are only as good as the signal to noise ratio and the amount of RMS power being pushed through them, as well as the attenuation of the spectrum being sent to each one

Can anyone tell me how the tweeter covers on the door come off? Do they unscrew like on the 928? I tried but didn't want to force it.

Also, if there's a crossover on a non-HiFi equipped car, where is it located? My guess - it's probably just a cap and may be attached to the tweeter. But since I don't have the tweeter cover off, I cant tell! :-)

thanks,

Jerry

As I recall the tweeters come off easily, there is a large threaded black ring on the back of them, just unscrew the ring. You have to remove the door cover to do this as the rin is on the back side. The crossover is a cap on the midrange speaker and wires lead up to the tweeter from there.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply on the tweeter. I just had my speaker cover off and the mid-range out. It looks like there could be a cap inline with the tweeter wire. I didn't even notice it first go. You can see it in the photo. Also, this Nokia speaker still has its label visible and you can see it is a 4 ohm speaker.
