6.5" Speakers in Door and "Tweeter Mod"
#1

I bought some used equipment, and one item are Focal 6.5" speakers and tweeters with crossover. I will be receiving them tomorrow.

This forum only has 7 pages of posts, and I have searched and looked through all pages, but still can't find a positive answer or links. Maybe I'm in the wrong forum?

Question 1: It appears people have installed 6.5" speakers in the doors, is this correct? Does anyone have a link to how this is done, i.e. what is cut and does the speaker sit outside the door panel (speaker grill visible that sits on top of the stock speaker grill), or better yet, have pictures?

Question 2: I've seen many posts stating there is an elusive thread that 968bills did on the tweeter mod....but I cannot locate it. Can somebody provide a link to it?

Sorry for being such a newbie.....but I searched and spent a lot of time reading posts, but could not find it....is there another forum for radio installs?

Thanks!

6.5" speakers will work in the forward door location of the cab, but not the coupe. The window run channel in the coupe runs right behind the center of the speaker location, so a larger and deeper driver will not fit (unless it's as shallow as a 4.5" driver I suppose).

Flash has successfully done the 6.5" speaker mod to his car. He switched to the more open 944 door pocket so half the speaker would not be blocked by the larger 968 door pocket piece.

Thanks for the info.....so it sounds like the doors of the coupe won't house the 5.25" speakers either that I saw a few posts on. I think I will put the Focal 6.5" in the back and step up for a new set of 4", or whatever they are, speakers for the doors.

bomb is correct

as for 5.25", they fit fine in the OEM locations, sometimes requiring a slight trim mod, but i'm not sure about up forward farther into the map pocket area.

Thanks Flash.....so in the coupe, the 5.25" should fit with a little trimming?

I will post pictures of the new "used" equipment later today, going to pick it up.....

in the OEM woofer location, yes. there is no difference between the hardtop and the cab in OEM locations. the only time you run into trouble is when you try to move them forward farther.

Thanks...picked up my equipment yesterday......got the Becker Porsche Traffic Pro head unit, JL Amp Focal K2 power speakers with tweeters and TONS and TONS of wiring from when it was pulled. Will post pictures....

Any suggestions on a relatively high end 5.25" speaker for the door? Relative is the key word and tricky phrase. I just got a FANTASTIC deal on the equipment, but I am poor again.

even more important that any speaker you can choose is to line the door with dynamat extreme. entirely cover the outer sheet metal panel (the one closest to the outside world). then, just about any decent driver will work pretty well. you have a severe depth limitation, so you will have to look around for something that fits within that, and still goes as low as you'd like.

as for the rear, see the "rear speaker enclosure mod" thread for instructions on how to dramatically improve what you get out of the rears. it really makes a huge difference in bottom end.

Paul - yes, 5.25" fits fine in the under-armrest position with a minimum of trimming and drilling. You don't get much sound out of these though because of their location - firing right at the side of your hip! Much more usable sound comes from the rear quarter speakers, but without Flash's rear speaker enclosure mod, the mid-bass is very boomy. There's just a big empty metal cavity in there that acts like an echo chamber. I'll be doing the foam mod thing after I get a few other things done on my car - including paintless dent removal in that area.

Thanks....I'm glad I pulled everything apart this weekend, traveling this week, and doing more research. Have the dynamite on order, will be arriving before I get home. Will be doing the rear speaker mod as part of this install.

Be careful not to blow yourself up while installing that stereo!

Paul here's that pic I promised you a few days ago:

In the center is the plywood amp base (edged with black tape) and the bracket that holds it to the spare tire mount - had some aluminum strips laying around the garage that I bent up and drilled. The amp is an old 5-channel Alpine workhorse, 50w x 4 + 150w to the sub. Works great!

I installed the rear speaker crossovers to the backside of the amp base because there just wasn't much room up near the speakers.

At the top you can see the JL 8" sub in the KLA sub enclosure. I haven't even heard it yet since my car died before I switched to the JL (the previous sub, a Polk, didn't go low enough - wasn't happy with it).

the JL will definitely go lower than the polk. it requires less air volume. you still won't go super low, as the box is only .23 cu ft, and the JL needs .35 to reach all the way down, but it will be better than any other driver i've found. without crunching the numbers, i would guess you'll get about 45hz or so before it "waffles".

the problem you will have is the power. 150W is not a lot for the JL. you may find it to be too small, depending on how much bump you are looking for.

Thanks Flash - I'm hoping I'll get a little bump out of it (the rear speaker enclosure mod will certainly help this as well). If I need more oomph, I believe the amp has a pre-out so I can easily add a more powerful mono sub amp.

Thanks for the picture! Gives me something to think about....I like the configuration. It might not work with my amp with the cooling fins, but I'll check it out tonight.
