What should my oill pressure reading aprox. be at 1000 RPM? (idle)
Thanks Ross

I believe mine is 4 bar plus with cold engine, and 2-2.5 bar with warm engine..

same on cold, closer to 3 though when warm..

My coupe gets about 2.5 bar at 1000 rpm but maybe only 1.6 bar at 800 rpm (ie idle). I get over 4 bar at 3000 rpm. My cab is always over 3 bar all the time. Of course 300,000 km in the coupe is more than 62,000 km in the cab.

sorry, I misread the 1000 rpm vs idle at 800 - the moment I even touch the gas pedal, so at 1,000 rpm it goes to full 5 bar when the engine is cold, and if warm, it still runs past 4 bar.. again, 1000 rpm that is.

btw, 101,000 miles on the engine, ran on Mobil 1 15-50 until early 2008 when I switched to Amsoil 5-40

Mine idles around 900 with the OP(hot) at 2 plus and(around 4.5) at speed.

Anybody know what is considered a worrisome hot oil pressure reading? Anything below 2? 1.5? Mine was around 2 at idle when hot last time I checked, but I'll check it again next time I drive it. And is oil pressure a reliable indicator of bearing health?

according to the workshop manual at idle, below .6 bar is a problem, as is below 3 bar at 3k rpm - it does not say hot or not

Doh! When in doubt, check the manual... Well, this is encouraging, as I (and everybody else who's responded to this thread) am well above this threshold, both at idle, and at 3K. I imagine these figures are hot, as they would be very weak numbers for a cold engine. Thanks for looking it up for us.

Just had an issue come up and I am looking for some advice.
My cab usually runs at about 3.5 bar when I am driving and hits 4 bar when cold or when revving at 4-5K.
This morning I was inching along the freeway on ramp and I noticed the oil pressure was at about 2 bar at idle. When I got onto the freeway and opened it up to about 3.5-4K the needle would not move above 3 bar.
When I rev the engine the oil pressure rises from 2 to 3 bar but will not go higher.

I got to work and parked. No oil leak, good level, good color, no smoke. All appeared normal.
Went out at the end of the day and the startup rev popped the needle up to 4 bar; like normal. As i drove home and the engine warmed up ( about 5-15 min. ) the oil dropped to 3 bar at 3K or higher and was at 2 bar at idle.

Should I panic? send it to the PM to run his oil pressure gauge and see if I have a bad sender/gauge, or should I remove and clean or just replace the oil pressure sender?

P.S. last week I changed the oil to 20w50 synthetic and a new filter, but all was well until today.

Thanks
Brian

That oil seems a bit thick for this car. I just switched from RedLine 10w40 to Amsoil 10w40, I use to run Mobil 15w50. But there are lots of differing opinions on oil out there, so your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the reply banditsc,

The issue is with the formulation of the oil. This is the first time that I tried Valvoline synthetic. The oil seems to thin out quite a bit when it gets warm ( about 15 mins. running time ), after that the pressure does not go much past 3 bar.
I thing that I'll switch back at the next oil change to Redline or Royal Purple.

Sure scared the crap out of me!

Thanks
Brian

while pressure is certainly important and is influenced by viscosity, it is the film strengh of the oil that is the defining factor. Synthetics versus dino will sometimes favor syns but not always.
How can you tell what film strengh of your oil is? Well, a VERY rough estimation is through the viscosity rating and how much it shears. Oil analysis is the only way to go. If the oil is not holding its viscosity then change your weights or brand to something with a better base stock.

What is it at idle? If it has dropped at idle I would suspect rod bearing. Ask me how I know.

There is also the posibility that your oil pressure relief valve is not completely aligned. Different oils and it may work better with the slicker ones. I switched my 944 back to dino oil and in no time the OPRV started sticking. Turns out it was pretty well misaligned. Got the tool, did the job and all was well.
