oil consumption
#1

Other than obvious stuff like failed rings, what are the most common causes of high oil consumption? My car seems to me to have increased its consumption to about 1 litre in 1500 km or so, but it also seems to be variable. I add some when the oil light comes on. When I add oil it usually is about a half litre and sometime I need to do that every 2 tanks but other times it is every 5-6.

I used some "engine reconditioner" and it seems to help - I got about 5000 km before needing to add some. But them it needed more after one tank. Could something be dirty and "stuck" (I am thinking PVC valve if I have one) such that it goes up and down.

I did valve seals when I did the head gasket about 20,000 km ago. There are now no oil leaks. I use Mobil 1 0W-40. The car does have a lot of km (302,000 km).

Ideas?

likely it's just tired - it is still within spec though, which is 1.5 liter per 1000km

lighter oils burn faster and go past the rings more easily than heavier oils do

bad valve guides will do it too

is it smoking at all at the tailpipe?

Is 0W40 necessary? Better perhaps change to 5W40. This will increasy also consumption.

Well Ii don't think it "smokes" - but there is a black residue that gets all over the rear valance. Sort of a dirty thing that I presume is oil. It comes off easily, though. I was thinking about going back to Mobil 1-15W50 like I used to use. Was just hoping that there might be a hooseyjigger or something that might be stuck, allowing for oil to get where it oughtn't be.
