ODOMETER/TRIPMETER ISSUES

If he does not have any, you can get them from paragon parts.
Rene, first of all, welcome to the wonderful world of 968 ownership. I'm surprised your odometer gear broke on your first ride - you're supposed to get at least one problem-free ride before the gremlins attack. Happily, though, you've found the site that will answer all of your questions. Again, welcome.

Jim
Thanks for the warm welcome and I think this is a very informative site with avid 968 enthusiast.

My OD problem turned out to be the "circuit board" and was sent out for speedometer repair. They added 5 mile to my milage so it was tested and put on 5 miles That's after 2 months of no mileage that's pretty good way of not racking up miles. Maybe that's how Don Hassenbein got such a low mileage car.

<bump>

I found another vendor that sells VDO parts. I recently had to replace the small 15 tooth gear and found PA Speedo on Ebay, He charges $19.95 for original VDO gear and another $7 for shipping, The only downside is they only have 1 pricey shipping option. I thought I'd save on shipping because it's a light part and they're only a few hundred mies up the coast from me. I know some vendors have a so-called handling fee which can be used to increase the price.

This same gear is also found in Audi's, Mercedes, Volvo and some VW's. I found most Vendors charge $25 with $4 shipping.

A word to the wise; make sure all the gears are meshed prior to re-assembly. The new gear is not a hard plastic so it's not easy to feel if it's engaged. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I tried your idea. BRILLIANT!!

James, or anyone else here who might know the answer... is there a single contact behind the windshield washer fluid warning light that can be easily disconnected when the VDO is out, one which will not affect any other lights ?

I'm having the LED lights kit ( from Jager ) installed sometime next week and I'm thinking since the VDO will be out maybe I can ask them to kill that warning light that's constantly on, instead of me wasting $ for parts and labor to replace a fluid container sensor for which I have absolutely no use.

Dan,

I'm pretty sure all of those indicator lights have their own bulbs. It's been a little while since I've had a dash apart, but I do believe that to be the case. Hope that helps. If I get crazy over the weekend, I do need to take mine out one more time, so I'll have a look for you, but I've got to put my neighbor's BMW doors back together, so not sure if I'll get to it or not before you'd need to know.

Thanks Darryl, and no worries, I am still waiting for the shipment and then have yet to set up the appointment so it will be a while.. It was more my curiosity than anything else since I'm sure ( or, I should say I hope ..) those guys can look into it and figure it out while in there, but it would be great if I knew what's possible ahead of time. This is the same place that fixed my broken trip odo gear ( Palo Alto Speedometer ), well known locally for specializing in exotic cars so I trust they can do a great job with the LEDs installation in the 968 aslo.

Incidentally, does our VDO come out without having to remove the steering wheel ?

Just went thru the replacement................when I got the motor off and flipped the gear over to see the small one......sure enough......it was st0pped right where the tooth was broke. Slipped the new 15 tooth gear on from Jeff at Odometer Grears. Going to reinstall the gauge unit now. Jeff can be reached at www. odometergears.com or sales@odometergears.com or (757)-593-3478 or (757) 771-6694. Very helpfull guy and prompt delivery. I guess I didn't read enough though as I didn't know there were those hinged plastic clamps holding the 3 harnesses on the guage package...............only broke one clip so I should be OK.

I also have one broken clip...and I believe it's because of that that the illumination lights on the left side of the instrument panel don't turn on and the water temp gauge goes crazy at times. I have to pull the wheel to pull the instruments, and I've been saying I'll do it "next week" for more than a year. But, maybe I'll do it next week.

Just checking in and I see that a few of you have gotten your gears in. I'm glad it worked out! I am honestly surprised at the number of people that have needed these gears. When I originally designed the gear to fix the broken gear in my car, I thought I would make a full batch of gears since it didn't require much more effort to make 20. "That should last me awhile" I thought. I believe I am on the third batch now. I'm not really making money on them (I'm charging something so the wife doesn't give me grief) but I am glad I can offer something to the community.

Are you still selling the odometer gears? Also could you send the R&R pictures. Can't find them on the forum. Thanks. Tried to send a message, but your inbox was full.....

Do you have a custome wheel? The whole unit will come out with the stock wheel in place. Its a b... but it will come out.

Well, my gears went out on me last Friday on the way home from work. Am taking the car in this afternoon for a few other things and am going to let them handle it. They said it would be a Speedometer rebuild from a shop out in California...hopefully it can be quick. I haven't tinkered enough of my car to trust myself pulling out the instrument cluster. As I kept reading the posts about it I almost had myself talked into it, but I think I will just leave it to the professionals at RUF.

Mustang, it really isn't very hard to do the job yourself, but in my opinion, removing the steering wheel makes it a whole lot easier. It only requires a few basic tools.

Wiseman, yes, I have a 996 wheel. Removing it really is not a big deal, once I get started. I just need to motivate...motivate...motivate...

<!--coloro:#00BFFF--><!--/coloro-->+1 on odometergears.com. Jeff is fantastic.

I've heard misery loves company, so I thought of joining this pool of tears...
Yes, I am guilty of driving without clocking the journey..
But it's only been about 7 miles worth, from the gas station for a fill-up, hit the reset,
and that was it. Arrived home with just the tenths rolling.
With the recommendations, I tried to leave Brett a message, mail box full.
Contacted Jeff @ Odometer Gears, ordered both the 15 tooth pod and the 16 tooth gear.
Jeff stated he is also sending the 12 tooth, just in case, and asked me to send back the one I don't need.
Great service, he said they are being shipped today.
Thanks to all!

Since the dash is coming off, and I really don't have any problems with anything related, is there anything I
should check, replace, clean?
