New washer on my oil drain plug
#1

I just got a couple of K&N oil filters from Amazon and am anxious to get a lighter weight oil into my car with the cold weather.

Unfortunately, I discovered that I do not have any more washers for the oil drain plug.

The local Pep Boys doesn't have any washers of the right size, and paying $5 in shipping for a $0.25 part doesn't seem like a good idea.

So the question is... do I really need to replace the washer every time?

Can't I just re-use the washer from the last oil change?

What are the chances that it will leak?

Thanks, in advance, for the advice.

While I make it a habit to replace the washer with every oil change, I've been in the same situation as you over the years with several cars, and have never had a problem re-using the old washer. I wouldn't worry about it. But have you checked with your local Porsche dealer?

I was told to use a new one each oil change. I just bought 10 from Sunset Porsche parts; they were very cheap.

It is good practice to change it everytime but I never do and I have never had a problem. Technically it is not even under any pressure. I wouldn't think twice about it and just grab some extras when you get a chance.

I've always changed it every time since they're literally pennies, but I have heard of people flipping them around and using a new one every other time. Not like that saves a ton of money so I don't know why you'd do that. I can tell you that if you don't put a crush gasket on, it will seep and drip. The previous owner of my Coupe didn't use one which was the source of my drip!
