Need new front struts.....

My 94 daily driver with 104,000 miles is in need of new struts up front and shocks in the rear....I don't want anything fancy...just a OEM type replacement set....any suggestions...also do the struts and springs get replaced as a unit or just the strut cartridge???

If you're looking for OEM replacements I'd suggest just contacting Sunset Porsche. The last time I checked the front struts were around $500 for the set. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of choice for the front strut, unless your interested in a racing strut. During replacement the original spring is retained and the whole strut asm. is replaced. The configuration on my old 924 was actually better - it was a simple drop-in cartridge style.
As for the rears, check with Paragon, they have a few HD shocks to choose from that are around ~$90 /ea.

OEM prices don't look that bad so our old fix may not be worth the effort. Kind of depends on whether yo do your own work or not. We chop 2" off of the top of the struts, dump out the cartridge, chop 4 inches off of the top of a couple of Jetta struts from the scrap yard, press them 2 inches into the old struts, weld a little and shove a 85/1 or earlier strut for a 944 in it. If you use the economical gabriels from Autozone then you get a real deal. If you use the nice Bilsteins you get a really good ride. Either way you save a buck. BTW, does Koni still sell the insert where you chop the top off, drill the bottom, drop the cartridge in and bolt it from the bottom? Just never been a real Koni fan.

Just the strut, the spring doesn't get replaced. You can get the Koni's from Paragon and others, but Paragon will do the conversion for the strut housing if you want, but it's real easy to do. Paragon has the front Koni's for $166 a piece and the rears for $124 a piece.

Have you driven any other 968's? That might help you sort out how you want the car to handle. I have the M030 stuff, but my rears are adjustable Koni shocks without the spring helpers. I think I am better off without them, and I have good advice that they can cause the back end to get more jittery than it already is when driven on the street. Might be a different story on the track, but i have never been there. Anyway, these Koni's (Sport) I have for the rear are adjustable by compressing and twisting and offer a pretty good range of soft vs. firm in terms of feel and performance. If I recall, they were maybe $225 or so, and really easy to install in your own garage. I mounted them after removing my OEM rear shocks and feel that they are an improvement.

The MO30 set-up is good. some ppl remove the helper spring which will reduce the rear hop. I really like the MO30 set-up. Car rotates really nicely, it is jumpy/bouncy on the street however. I have Koni adjustables front and rear with H&R springs up front & the rear lowered. My car feels much more composed on the street compared to an MO30 car.....although it isnt as fun to drive imo.

I do have both front & rear turbo s spoilers, so the extra downforce is part of the reason the car feels more planted then a stock MO30 car.

Have my cab booked in to do the Koni adjustable strut insert conversion this week. Have the Koni kit and the write up. From what I have been able to read I do not believe there is a need for any additional hardware to convert from stock Sachs to the Koni adjustable sports inserts, is this correct? The Paragon write up is pretty clear, the only thing I am not sure I understand is the adjustable piece at the top of the strut tower when installed, how does that work, any additional mods / hardware required for that to work?

I am retaining the stock springs and ride height, and plan to set the rears 1 turn from full soft, does that seem reasonable for a cab that will not see track service.. Fronts will be trial and error, but will probably start off also 1 turn from full soft.

if you are using stock torsions, then set the shocks either full soft or 1/2 turn from full soft - 1 turn is too stiff for that spring rate - it may "feel" sportier and all that, but in reality it is just bouncing, as the only setting on those is rebound

fronts should be about halfway with stock springs

In looking at choices for strut inserts, I keep finding that some of the inserts crosslist with the early Volkswagen Super Beatle.

 

Has anyone else noticed this? I find it odd (although not surprising) that the inserts are crosslisted, but they have one price for the Porsche, and another for the VW- even though they seem to be the same part.
