Need A windshield
#21

OK, picked up my BRAND NEW windshield from the nearby porsche dealer today. ~650$ with green top tint AND antenna (apparently all made with antenna now). It is definately for the coupe size wise. you can get a clear windshield for 200$ more...but I like the green tint along the top.

also, comes with rear view mirror mount already installed. Windshield surround 40$, got that as well.

The 944 windshield is slightly smaller, but it works. We used one on our 968 Firehawk and it is just fine. I would recommend (and have heard about) getting a wider outer seal to accommodate the slightly smaller glass. Strangely the actual steel that makes the window frame is the exact same number weather 944 or 968. Why the glass would be different is beyond me.

still can't figure out if the 944 coupe post 1986 fits...plenty of those around

ANYONE HAVE BOTH CARS AND CAN MEASURE...??

as for antenna, yeah I DON"T want it.[/quote]

Thanks Blue!

I heard from Porsche guy the Porsche new window seal superceeds all older ones and is a one piece loop. I have it and it needs to be cut to fit the 968(no biggie). I considered 944 glass but did not want to deal with any issues on size the installer might bring up.

Where would you get a "wider" seal? Could a good glass man just make one? I'm going to try this. Anyone think it's a bad idea?

That is good to know. Last time I replaced the windshield on the race car I went with the more expensive and harder to find 968 windshield. The late 944 windshield looked identical but I couldn't find definitive proof it would work. I'll try a cheap 944 windshield next time.

i think you have to use the 951 or S2 windshield - i think the early cars were different

porsche guy told me the glass is a bit smaller but could be made to fit(but a few minutes and some 944 owner on this board could make a few measurements). any good glass installer should have some universal seals which might fit.

better to get the one that fits IMHO. I know there are 8 more coupe windshields in Atlanta Porsche warehouse.

Found this post:

"I just had a new aftermarket 1988 944 windshield installed in 1994 968 by Triumph Glass here in Lafayette, LA for $195 (took 45 minutes at most). Looked good and this included a 3/4" rubber strip around it. Since there is a slight size difference. Looked great. This is a track car but would have used in a street car since the 968 windshield is $650 if you can find it."

here is a look at the windshield surround. Apparently, My windshield was previously installed and removed without use. However, the plastic moulding snap trim was missing. The local installer, LAIRDS, did a great job without it . Only difference is the small grooves in the new trim.

PS: that is not a scratch.

I had a 944 windshield installed on my 968 yesterday. Installer used a size 25 generic seal (stock is a 20). It looks great. $360 total.

That information on the seal is great news for those who need a new windshield in the future.

Did you have this done @ safelite?

Could you post some pics of the seal around the upper edge and lower edge when you get a chance?

Might be a moot (is that a real word?) point, but what about a plexi windshield??? Taste's great, less filling....

Anybody have experience with plexi windows and hatches???

I hate going to the gym trying to save weight. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

It will scratch up pretty quick on a street car.

No to mention safety.

I probobly paid too much even though it was the "standard" quoted price. It took me quite a while and a lot of cajoling to get the installer to give it a try so a little extra is ok. I'll post pictures when I get a chance.

I really think that the 944 and 968 is the same size. When you have a generic windshield from one of the "come to your door and stick it in" folks they use their own rubber to make it fit. I recently bought a windshield from one of these installers but chose to put in in myself because I was reworking the dash and already had done the remove. It left a reasonable gap on the 944 and needed some generic rubber a little larger than stock. Think price for non antenna one was just over a hundered buckis.

I'm in the middle of finding a new windshield, and my dealer says 944s and 968s take the same part number; must be a fairly recent change. $881, but he's checking for non-Porsche parts for me.

not sure what the deal is here - just got my new windshield from porshe - about $460 overnight - would have been about $50 less through sunset but would have taken 3 more days

I forgot to tell ya, Flash, but on the way back from Paso, I got hit with a rock or something that cracked the heck out of my windshield. Yepper, chaulk another one up for Murphy. That basta'd. So anyways, looks like I'm going to be needing a new windshield as well. After reading through this thread, I think I'll explore the 944 S2 windshield route to if that will save me any money. No hurry on this one. At least, not yet.
