Mystery power plug under the hood
#1

Ok, folks, here's a question I need help with.

My '94 cab has what appears to be a power source, 1 red wire & 1 black wire running to a plastic female connector recepticle which dangles down a couple inches from inside the under-hood cross brace a little to the right of where the hood release lever assembly is attached to the brace. With the hood raised I can't find anything that should obviously plug into it. Was there an underhood light that I am missing? What is this thing for?

Suggestions, guesses, or wild speculation would be appreciated. It's not doing anything, but my curiosity is piqued. It's there for a reason but I can't figure out what. Appreciate any help solving this mystery. My 944 didn't have it and I can't find anything in the manuals. Thanks.

Just checked the colour code, definitely the hood light. Someone probably removed it rather than fix it because it was draining the battery. If you remove it, it is hard to tell something was supposed to be there, except for the dangling wires of course <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I also have a set of wires hanging up there and waht appears to be a few small remnants of the hood light. I've looked in Pelican and some other sites for that light with no luck. Can anyone post a pic of what it looks like and a part# or availability if possible?

My hood light was all cracked and dangling as well - must take a beating when dropping the hood. It's on my ever-growing list of thing to fix...

Guys, mystery solved, thanks to your help. The power plug is definitely for the engine compartment light, which I am missing. Thanks very much to Flash for the part numbers and to astroede for the photo. Now the search begins for a replacement light assembly. I'll post when I find a source so those who need one can save some legwork.

must take a beating when dropping the hood

Drop the hood??? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> On a P-car? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

No, No, No... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Gently lower, make contact and press firmly down! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Ahhhh... that's better! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

actually, that is the correct way to close our hood - you are supposed to drop it from about 18" - you are NEVER supposed to push down on it, especially not at the badge area - this can cause a dent that is very difficult to fix (ask me how i know)

of course this presume that the hood is properly set so that when it flexes downward it doesn't hit anything

i've also suffered damage from dropping it, but that was my own fault for not making sure everything was out of the way first

I am guilty of lowering the hood and pressing lightly on the badge <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I have always feared dropping the hood and having it flex and bang on the strut brace.

lol - many have that fear - i myself got dinged when i had a kla brace incorrectly installed

however, if dropped from the height i specced, it doesn't happen - higher up, and it could - having the hood set incorrectly and it could

it even says in the owner's manual though to gently drop it into the lock and does not say to push down anywhere at any time

Flash, I pulled up page 803-01 and I don't see where any of the parts is labeled switch. Having a hard time identifying it. Can you pinpoint the part #? Second. on the same page, item#2...."Filler Piece". Are those the same rubber pieces that help align the hood height to the fender height when you close it? I noticed some time ago that I do not have any of those pieces on my car yet GM used to put about 3 on each side of their fenders to keep the hood height aligned with the fender.

without actually seeing the part, i can't be sure either - the microswitch is at the bottom of part #19

#2 is a rubber block that sits at the division between the heater area and the engine bay - yes, it is to maintain hood height at that location
