Jay is not only clever, he's right!!!!!
As the unit lights up, it probably isn't a power issue.
I had the exact same scenario when I first received my coupe. I pressed and held the "AM/FM" button for a few seconds; and on came the "CODE" request.
I input the code and viola! The radio worked perfectly.
Of course the CR-1 has it's short-comings, but it is original equipment.
If you really feel the need to add an aftermarket head unit, buy a radio "pigtail" (that snaps into the car's wiring harness). Then "crimp" the naked end onto your new aftermarket radio.
This way you don't compromise the car's originality or wiring.
