My 968 has a dead radio???
#1

Just had my 968 dropped off. I actually like the Porsche radio with 6 CD changer included, but was disappointed when I pushed the power button the unit lit up but nothing shows on the viewing screen-tape, cd, whatever. Is she dead?

Unlikely, you just need to enter the radio code.

This code is located on two "credit cards" in you radio's instructions (usually in the black leather binder).

As you know, the real music is the intake/engine/exhaust. Soooo, get the radio going with the code for the daily commute and enjoy the real music which is the 968.

I ahve not had a radio in my 2nd one for 3,000 miles- just the sound of the car. God I need to hook up my stereo. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

If nothing displays on the front you most likely have a power problem, not a code issue.

You should have a fuse (flat style) on the back of the head unit, you may have to remove the head unit to check the fuse.

The stock units have had many problems as they've aged, do a search and you'll see that one side of the output going caput is one of the more common ones.

(From the owners Manual)

"...In such a case, push the BAND SELECTOR (AM/FM) Switch for more than 2 seconds and "CODE" will appear in the display and you can enter the code again."

Hope that this helps,

Jay

Damn Jay I should have made you drive my car back from Pa, it would have had a radio working in it by now. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Jay is not only clever, he's right!!!!!

As the unit lights up, it probably isn't a power issue.

I had the exact same scenario when I first received my coupe. I pressed and held the "AM/FM" button for a few seconds; and on came the "CODE" request.

I input the code and viola! The radio worked perfectly.

Of course the CR-1 has it's short-comings, but it is original equipment.

If you really feel the need to add an aftermarket head unit, buy a radio "pigtail" (that snaps into the car's wiring harness). Then "crimp" the naked end onto your new aftermarket radio.

This way you don't compromise the car's originality or wiring.

I missed the part about the unit lighting up....my error.

On my 911 the flashing C O D E came on the display within 2 sec. of powering the unit up. My mistake again. I'll shut up now.

If the radio code has been incorrectly entered the radio will be blank for several minutes before displaying "CODE". The time that it is blank increases with each bad entry. On our Cab it would take up to an hour and a half of driving with the radio on before the "Code" would display again. It wouldn't reset with the key in the ignition and in the "On" position but with the engine not running. It also took several attempts to get the right "Code" from a Porsche dealer. Obviously make sure you have the "Code" before trying, and try driving with the radio "On" to get it to display "Code". One it rests, It will stay in the "Code" mode after you stop, as long as you don't enter the wrong "Code" again.

I just bought a '94 968 that the stock Porsche radio keeps showing CODE on the screen and thus won't work. The supposed code required has a 0 in it, which of course doesn't exist on the key pad (only the numbers 1-6 are available). I was told by Porsche that you have to punch in any number from 1 to 6 and then use the seek buttons to change that input number up or down to get to the 0, but when I try to do this the number never changes from what I originally input. What gives with this radio, is it defective or am I not using the right procedure? What is the right procedure? Damn POS...

Put in the number without the 0. That works on my CR-1.
