Somehow, I just knew that after having seen the Rolling Stones last evening nothing that could happen afterward could be as good. Yep, I was right.
About 10 days ago I had the clutch and brake fluid replaced and then promptly blew a clutch hose. On the suggestion of Flash I had the master and slave cylinders also replaced. I got the car back on Wednesday and since then have driven about 400 trouble free km. I even had the contacts for the knock sensors cleaned and now, with Jay's chip, the car neither knocks nor turns on lights. As Joe Walsh said "life's been good to me SO FAR".
This morning, on my way for a coffee and the newspaper review of the Stones show, it seemed subjectively that something "slipped" when changing gears. My clutch engagement point now seems to be almost at the floor. To me, the clutch pedal also seems to be lighter to push in.
What could cause this? I can't see any evidence of a leak and the brake fluid reservoir is full. No problems at all with the driving, getting into gear, etc. Just that the pedal engagement point is almost at the end of the travel.

It was sudden. I thought, in fact, that my shoe had some water on it and had slipped on the pedal. I now can just barely get into reverse as I haven't enough pedal left. Doesn't "pump up" if I press the clutch a few times. Works fine otherwsie.

Clutch problem diagnosed. Apparently, a PO cracked the firewall somewhere near where the clutch and brake parts all are attached and near where the clutch assembly passes through. A brace was welded between the firewall and the struct tower to strengthen this. The brace was removed last week to allow replacement of the slave cylinder and, when replaced, broke sometime afterward due to an inadequate weld. When I depress the clutch pedal the firewall flexes and causes the engagement point to be nearer the floor. This is why I thought that something slipped (the brace broke). The brace is being re-installed today. What fun dealing with all of these mickey-mouse solutions to problems implemented by POs who really didn't try to do anything right.
