Maybe a new Tip Chip?
#1

while max was out about a year ago to do the belts on the white car and so i could get started on the DIY, when we were done, we decided to fiddle with the white car a bit

first we stuck in the modded airbox (since i supercharged the blue car, i had one in the attic)

then it came time to think about a chip - we already knew that chips didn't have the same kinds of effect on tips, but wanted to see what we could do. it was amazingly easy with the two of us in the car, as we both knew how to tune, we both had the same tuning tools, and we could easily communicate. it could have been either one of us in either chair. a pretty rare experience for me. "it feels like it needs some timing right here" "it's a bit soft on fuel here" - in a matter of about an hour we were homing in on some real improvement. it was pretty fun.

when we were done, the car really scooted, with a very different feel. in max's words, "it's quicker than a stock 6 speed". the throttle response was immediately evident.

what we did was very preliminary, and we really didn't have enough time to fully work things out, so since then, i've been fiddling with the maps some more, and there are a couple of maps i still want to look at and maybe tweak a bit, and will do that later this month, after i finish putting the blue car back together, but already it's so much improvement that i am not going to supercharge that car. i never really liked the idea of that anyway, as i really wanted to keep that one pretty much stock, but now that it has come alive, i feel much better about the decision. it's not anywhere near the power the SC kit adds, but it really wakes up the midrange and throttle response. it's enough that i just don't feel the need to mess with it further on the "cruiser".

fuel economy is still great too. i got about 24mpg on a 300 mile highway run to paso robles last month.

i'm not sure yet if i'm going to market it or not. i'm really not looking at this as a money maker. besides, there just aren't that many tips out there that would want one, and frankly i just don't want to get into another chip war. i'd have to go and put it on the dyno, and it wouldn't really show any of the improvement there, because a dyno only shows wide open throttle, and the improvement is really in the midrange part throttle stuff. the peak numbers are going to be about the same as any other chip.

if i did put it out there, i'd charge just enough so that a few chips can cover the expense of the dyno time. i'm guessing maybe $79. if it weren't for the dyno time, i could put it out there for less, but i don't think anybody is going to let me get away without that. it's a real pain too, because it will inevitably bring up comparison arguments and such, and i really don't want to get into that.

lol - maybe i'll give it away free with a purchase of something else, so i can avoid all of that. i've been thinking about free stuff anyway. i'm pretty sure this is the way i'll go.

no, i am not going to be doing anything for the manual cars. that's already covered.

but i was curious to see how many people might even be interested.

I'd be in. Was about to go for the Rsbarn chip but to have a tip spec one sounds great.

yeah - the programming for the tip is definitely different than for a 6 speed. i was really quite amazed at just how different on the supercharger tuning.

i am almost satisfied with the tuning. there is really just one more map that i want to fiddle with. i'll have time to finish it up in about 2 weeks.

as i said, i think i am going to give them away. for instance to give people a choice of one of a couple of items as free gifts with a purchase of a certain amount. i figure that way, because it would be "free" people would be less likely to moan about charts, and then i don't have to go through the dyno testing, which would only show the same outputs as everybody else, and wouldn't show the part throttle improvements. all i have to do is figure out how to incorporate that into the shopping cart software, and figure out what the items will be.

Well I for one would be happy to pay and promise not to moan! I've read enough posts on the subject of chips to understand that the difference is in the feel rather than the charts. Snappier throttle response would be top of my list, I wanted a 6 speed but they are as rare as rocking horse poo here. As things have worked out a tip is the better compromise for my daily drive. Especially since rupturing my achilles last year, there is no way I could press that clutch a hundred times on the way to work, I just slap it in tip mode and pretend!

I would definitely be up for one and it's something I could afford to have shipped to the UK.

Yep, I understand about different climates etc, but would still like to give it a go.

Very interested. I have the speed 6 chip now...I think a quicker kick down will help with the driving experience.

I tend to go tip but I also change somethings with the Tip.

Its reversed with the up - down. and the relay is removed for the auto shift so I can shift into N without pressing the brake pedal.

Luck

If you do go ahead with the tip chip I wonder whether it might be possible for you to source two sets of porterfield R4S pads for me so they can be shipped at the same time to New Zealand. I was originally intending to place an order through Pete at RSBarn, but understand he does not stock the R4S, so I would end up paying shipping twice. Happy to pay a deposit and extra for the hassle.

I met up with one of only two guys I know in NZ with a 968 the other day (he has the rsbarn chip) and compared notes, so the stuff you and the other post on the forum is the only regular way to keep up to date. Really appreciate it.

I'll be overseas for the next two weeks so apologies in advance if I do not respond immediately.

Cheers

unknown - funny

clive - i don't "stock" the pads either. i set up a group buy a couple of years ago, but that was a one shot deal. you can order the pads direct from porterfield. there wouldn't really be any shipping on the chip, as i can put it in an envelope and mail it.

Flash, any news on the development of the Tip Chip? I've also been in touch with the guy who no longer needs the D1R SC kit - I'm second in line. Can you provide details on the weight/size of the packaged up kit for shipping purposes, in case I get lucky? Thanks

lol - uh - that makes 2

i just want to spend an afternoon seeing if there is any more cleanup to be made. unfortunately that project is behind getting my car back, putting it back together, and then working out the stage 2 kit for the SC. the good news is that i think my car goes back on the ground tuesday for a dyno break in of the new motor. that means it comes back here the following day and i can get going on things.

Be a shame for it not to happen, but having read the other thread, I really understand why you've made the decision you have.
