while max was out about a year ago to do the belts on the white car and so i could get started on the DIY, when we were done, we decided to fiddle with the white car a bit
first we stuck in the modded airbox (since i supercharged the blue car, i had one in the attic)
then it came time to think about a chip - we already knew that chips didn't have the same kinds of effect on tips, but wanted to see what we could do. it was amazingly easy with the two of us in the car, as we both knew how to tune, we both had the same tuning tools, and we could easily communicate. it could have been either one of us in either chair. a pretty rare experience for me. "it feels like it needs some timing right here" "it's a bit soft on fuel here" - in a matter of about an hour we were homing in on some real improvement. it was pretty fun.
when we were done, the car really scooted, with a very different feel. in max's words, "it's quicker than a stock 6 speed". the throttle response was immediately evident.
what we did was very preliminary, and we really didn't have enough time to fully work things out, so since then, i've been fiddling with the maps some more, and there are a couple of maps i still want to look at and maybe tweak a bit, and will do that later this month, after i finish putting the blue car back together, but already it's so much improvement that i am not going to supercharge that car. i never really liked the idea of that anyway, as i really wanted to keep that one pretty much stock, but now that it has come alive, i feel much better about the decision. it's not anywhere near the power the SC kit adds, but it really wakes up the midrange and throttle response. it's enough that i just don't feel the need to mess with it further on the "cruiser".
fuel economy is still great too. i got about 24mpg on a 300 mile highway run to paso robles last month.
i'm not sure yet if i'm going to market it or not. i'm really not looking at this as a money maker. besides, there just aren't that many tips out there that would want one, and frankly i just don't want to get into another chip war. i'd have to go and put it on the dyno, and it wouldn't really show any of the improvement there, because a dyno only shows wide open throttle, and the improvement is really in the midrange part throttle stuff. the peak numbers are going to be about the same as any other chip.
if i did put it out there, i'd charge just enough so that a few chips can cover the expense of the dyno time. i'm guessing maybe $79. if it weren't for the dyno time, i could put it out there for less, but i don't think anybody is going to let me get away without that. it's a real pain too, because it will inevitably bring up comparison arguments and such, and i really don't want to get into that.
lol - maybe i'll give it away free with a purchase of something else, so i can avoid all of that. i've been thinking about free stuff anyway. i'm pretty sure this is the way i'll go.
no, i am not going to be doing anything for the manual cars. that's already covered.
but i was curious to see how many people might even be interested.
