Limited oil options
#21

Should synthetic oil be replaced based on a time interval if you don't put a lot of miles on the car?  Does anything bad happen to it over time in the pan/engine?  If yes, what is a reasonable time interval?

No I don't think so, but it is a good idea to fire it up once in a while

I drive it about once a week, but have only put about 5k miles in 4 years.  Just didn't know if time became a problem if mileage interval was small.

I wouldn't keep oil in the engine synthetic or not for more than a year.

I can just as easy find some manufacturers who recommend 10W-40 for our engines - Shell or Kroon Oil to name a few. Castrol says differently (10W-30), Mobil 1 does too (indeed 0W-40).

Interesting: the Shell 'Lubematch' aid asks for one's location, so I get a different oil when I change my location from Belgium to Sweden. Makes sense: different climate, different oil and/or viscosity.

What I'm trying to say is, use the oil (or at least the viscosity) that came with the car when it was new, unless it was imported from a much hotter or colder climate than where it's in use now. Even the oil recommended in your manual is upgraded to modern standards since then, and far exceeds what was needed and available in the 90's.

And a big +1 on Bandit's post: change it once a year (or 15000 km). Changing it too often is also a waste of money, imo.

PS: my wifes's car gets an oil change every 2 years or 30000 km (max! - variable service interval) with full synthetic 5w30 Long Life, as recommended by VW, but this obviously isn't a 20+ year old engine.

I checked with my guy. He used the Valvoline with a high amount of ZDDP - so I think I am pretty good.

Discussion on oil and tires on car forums start as many wars as politics and religion.

I think I will try to stay away from all four topics.

I tried out Liqui Moly synthetic oil.  It's on the Porsche A40 list.  I think this uses a molybdenum based compound rather than Zinc.  This was recommended for diesel engine to help with camshaft wear rather than adding ZDDP.  Now I'm not so sure this is adequate.  I could add ZDDP, but I'm hesitant to do so.  These additives may not play well together.

My understanding is that these Mo based additives are more catalyst friendly.
