Relax, everyone. Flash and I have talked and I'm going to look for it this weekend. Assuming I can find it in my garage, I'll ship it directly to Flash.

If I can't find it in my garage, it'll be because my kids have buried it under old bicycles, soccer balls, skate boards, scooters, riding helmets and crops, well, you get the idea.

Would this be compatible with the shift block? or would that be too many good things?

Excellent question- 'cause I do love the shift block and will probably get one (or take the one in the coupe) and put it in the cab.

I saw this recently somewhere else. I wonder if this could be incoperated easily, to eliminate the rubber bushings.

it will not work with the shift block - i spoke to the guy who makes the shift block, and he said that would be too much

Great news - of all the mods I've done to my car (chip, airbox, M030 sways, strut brace, RSB Cat back, etc) the 944racing SS still tops my list as best mod... not that I don't like the others, it just gives the car a more sporting feel with the shorter throws...

yeah - this is one we have needed back up and running for a while - i have a couple of improvements to make on it too, after having played with mine for a long time now

i'll jump on this the minute it arrives here - it won't take long to get going

there will be plenty of them to go around too, so everybody can relax - pete will have them in stock - no, i don't know what they will go for yet, but i will the day after i get it here
It increases the effort of the shifts a bit, and renders them a little notchy, but you get used to stuff like that.
Ok, I don't get it ; why is this preferable over the current longer throw, effortless , smooth shifting ? Is it simply a matter of gaining the fraction of a fraction of a second ( which I can appreciate if you race the car ) , or does it also offer a benefit in some respects for us non-track 968s ? I, for one can't stand the Ferrari shifter type "notchy" feel, but if this is not that extreme and is simply a tighter, shorter throw but smooth ( thinking Lotus Esprit - like ) I'm on board too !

shorter and tighter throws mean less hunting for a gear - it also means faster shifts - on the freeway, or in normal driving, this is a non-issue, but in a canyon, a fraction of a second can mean the difference between getting the gear at the right time, and not - this can be the difference between spinning out and not

if you are still stopping at neutral in your shifting, or it is not one smooth motion but more like 3 independent shifter movements, or you find your shifting to be "push clutch-shift-release clutch", rather than a single simultaneous action coordinating shifting with the clutch, then this is clearly not an issue for you, and you probably won't enjoy the benefits

with any shorter shifter setup, whether via a kit in the rear or a shorter shifter, at a bare minimum, the amount of extra force required will be proportional to the amount of pattern size decrease

dan, you drove my car, didn't you? - i have the rear mounted kit we are talking about

yup, and not really my kind of shifting. but since I was in a euphoric state ( having a blast and almost in disbelief ) with the feel and handling of that "go-kart" suspension I hardly paid attention to that element ...

no worries - i would rather somebody try it first and decide they didn't like it rather than somebody buy something and try to explain things about it afterward

Flash,

Maybe I missed it in the earlier posts, but how is the kit you're working on different from the one Spped-6 sells (or at least used to sell)? I bought my car from Chris Aarons (owner of Speed-6), and it has his kit, which, as I've said, suits me well, even if it is a bit on the notchy side.

Dan,

I'll try my best not to sound like I'm dissing the stock shifter, and those who love it, but I've only driven one other 968 besides mine, and it had the stock shifter. This was long before I started doing DEs, but I must say, I was utterly shocked and flabbergasted at how long and loopy the throws were, especially for a sports car. Holy rowboat, Batman! To my taste, it was awful, but then again, maybe it had some sort of problem. So, comparing that to a bit of the stiffness that comes with the short shift kits, personally (and this is of course a matter of personal taste), I would take the short shift kit any day. Does anyone else have a comparable experience comparing stock vs. short shift kit?

this one may require some terminology clarification

the shifter is the lever that connects to the linkage

the knob is what slips down over the shifter - many people call this the shifter, but it is really the shift knob

the short shift kit is a geometry changing assembly that mounts at the transaxle

the last time i talked to chris, he said he only sells the shifter replacement, and no longer sells the short shift kit

with this kit, your shifter itself would not be touched - chris may have installed one of the other kits in your car though, while he still had them - pretty sure that's where i actually got mine

I'm pretty sure mine is actually the short shift kit that mounts to the transaxle, and I'm also reasonably sure this is the unit Chris used to sell through his company. So, now that that's clear (and thanks for the terminology clarification; I'm sure many will find it helpful), how does the one you're developing differ from the one that's in my car? Thanks.

How hard would it be to copy the unit that we all agree that we want?

If they are not made anymore there should be no infringement.

Can someone post a picture of the complete assembly?
