Hey there. I'm picking up my 968 next weekend and the first thing I want to do (besides oil change, balancers, timing belt, belts & hoses) is put in a short shifter. Where is the best place to get one. I see RSBarn but they only list for a 944. Can anyone suggest a place?
My Boxster that I just sold had a B&M and I'm thinking that Schnell might have one?

there used to be, but currently none is avaliable that uses the factory shift knob
Some folks are cutting down their current shifter by 1" or so. I am thinking of doing that and welding in a fitting so that I can switch out shift knobs. I will post pix when I do it.
there is a shortened shifter already, that accepts aftermarket knobs - check out speed-6 - they carry it
Not sure if we're talking about the same thing. I don't care how tall the shifter is but I'm looking for a short shift kit that shortens the throws. I have (had) a B&M kit on the Boxster and it shortened the throws by 30+% and really transformed the shifting. It was awesome. I know Vertex makes one for the 944 but I don't see anything for the 968. I do business with them on a Porsche business that I have but I'm just hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'll check with them as well.
Not sure if there is much of a market though. Does anyone know if the shift gate and shifter mechanism are the same in the 968 as they were in the 944? If I find anything out, I'll post it for all.

Stuttgart Motors of Lexington, Ky developed a Shift Block that eases shifting on the 968. It must be pretty good because RS Barn sells it too. I plan on putting the shift block on when I turn my 968 in for service. Here is a link to their 968 items:

The shifter from "Porscheshop.co.uk" looks the same as the one from Kokeln. Oddly Kokeln doesn't have a price listed[?]

Awesome. Just what I was hoping for. Doesn't sound like a widely acceted mod, like the Box. The owner of Kokeln lives about 5 houses away. I'll have to go and have a conversation with him...
Looking forward to the short shifter. I'm so used to one now that when I drove my 968 on a test drive, I really missed the tight shifts. I'll let y'all know what I find out.

the one at UK and the Kolkeln both use aftermarket knobs - they can shorten the pattern, however at a price - the aftermarket knobs vibrate - it's the same for the one at speed-6 - this is a subjective issue that you may or may not live with
the stuttgart block does not shorten pattern - it only tightens up slop
the only shift kit there has ever been that shortened the pattern, while using the factory knob, is one that was made by the now defunct 944 racing that mounted in the rear at the transaxle - to date nobody has duplicated it - i have one of these in my car - i just haven't ever removed it to duplicate it - even with this one though, i think the pattern is too big

Yes flash is correct here.
I have had one of the original 944 racing SSK,s fitted to my car. I find it just right...Yes it does reduce the gearstick movement..+ tightens everthing up...
Personaly i wouldnt want the throw to be any shorter than it is now, i find it just right...
I recently sold the car it was fitted to,, [968 cabrio] And bought a 968 Sport, Also i managed to pick up another SSK, from the original batch, that somebody hadnt got round to fitting. Just fitted it to my Sport, GREAT...
It might be worth putting a wanted post up on here + Rennlist to see if there are any floating about....
It doesnt look that difficult to make a SSK, youve just got to get hold of an original as a pattern....
IF someone does manage to fabricate one of these, you might also have a market in the UK, as a few folk that have driven my car ALL commented on how good the shifting is....
I have one from Speed-6. I like it a lot, as it significantly shortens the throws. It increases the effort of the shifts a bit, and renders them a little notchy, but you get used to stuff like that. Their web site is still active, so maybe they still carry it. Good luck.
Bob, let us know if you go forward with a S/Shifter - if i recall there are several members that are interested...
I have one of the original short-shift kits that ingnores the shift lever and works only on the linkage. Oddly enough, I've had it for about four years and still haven't gotten around to installing it. Someday.
please send it to me so i can take measurements and we can get these made again - i am happy to pay for shipping, and promise to return it very quickly
