I'm using Redline too, 75W90NS. Improved shifting both warm and cold I would say.

Thanks, that's the one I am using as well.

very happy to hear that the short shifter is working out so well - lol - not surprised that trying all the spacers caused interference - i included more than could likely be used, but wanted to allow for the possibility
we actually changed a dimension in REV 2 to accommodate anomalies we found in 2 cars with the REV 1 unit
p.s. - it now also fits the 944

It is a sweet kit. And it looks very factory, not at all like the other ones I've seen.

Flash,
I have recently installed the Design 1 short shifter paying particular attention to achieving the correct angle of gear lever inclination and alignment and I was pleased with the results. A little notchy and certainly a whole lot more effort required to engage reverse but no doubt an improvement over the factory set up.
However after >100klm I noted that under acceleration a small vibration had developed in the gear stick and this has continued to increase with further use (approximately 300klm).
Initially I thought this might be a egine mount related problem but these have now been inspected and passed as ok.
The original set up didn`t have any vibration and the gear knob is OEM.
I`m now going to remove the shifter and reinstal it replacing all bushings at the same time, but would appreciate any advice from you or the forum as to the posible cause and rectification of this frustrating problem before doing so.
Thank you for your assistance.

did you loctite the nut at the base?
12-22-2009, 04:34 PM
Flash,
Sure did. Installed it by the number.

Did you reinstall the rubber cap?

yeah - something not right somewhere, because there is nothing to "wear" out that wasn't there before - that was the whole idea behind the design

Thanks fellows but there was nothing "left over" and being an "old engineer" I have always employ the double check and tick QA when undertaking assembly.
The answer is to now to remove it and if I find an answer I will let you know.
Thanks for the input.

hmmm - odd - shouldn't be possible unless there was a worn part before, or something came loose or broke - the metal portion is exactly the same size, and in fact, if anything, the powder coating should have made it snugger - it's fully welded too, so no chance of it breaking
i'm wondering if the lower bushing cracked or something like that - any problem should have appeared immediately (noise when shifting, binding up, anything like that)
are there any other symptoms?

Flash,
Other than it is difficult to put into reverse ( super hard push and I mean super) no other problem other than vibration.
Your thought of a bush failure holds potential and at this time I need to open it up.
Thanks again .
Baz

remove the kit - something is very wrong somewhere
it should NOT be hard to push into reverse - mine is even shorter than anybody else's and it is not that hard to put in reverse - it takes a bit more effort, but not that much - it takes about the same percentage of extra effort as the percentage of shortening of the pattern
you definitely have something going on

Flash,
Just waiting for bearing shell from Porsches spares and I will then open it up and have a look.
Thanks again for the input.

let me know what you find, but the hard reverse is an indicator of something VERY wrong

Thanks.
Just out of interest. Does it look like its an original shifter , when sitting in the cabin. IE is the gearknob the same height as standard when installed.?
As some of the other types are a lot shorter.

It is a little shorter but it is not noticeable. Some of the shortened throw is related to the shorter total length of the stick.
