Is a Short Shift available?

I don't mind the longer throw, but the gates are a bit sloppier than other cars I've driven. The Elise block was almost telepathic - I loved it.



So does this merit as an invitation to drive the flashinator??? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I found all of the "loopiness" or "slop" to be gone once the shift block was installed. With that, I'm quite satisfied with the stock shifter, and don't need a short shift kit.

there's not much loopiness or slop in mine either, but I've only driven three other 968s ( one of which was Bob's ) so not a large sample to compare if there were differences from mine..or remember for that matter...



but maybe it was the combo of a different clutch combined with the short shift combined with the ride differences in Bob's car that left me with the impression the shifting itself was too difficult, so I'll have to giver it another try and focus soleley on that element before I decide.



I have to believe that a short shift, if just a bit tighter, is a better choice but i keep thinking it's too tight, and too clonky and that would take away from the effortless movement from one gear to another into more abrupt movements needed to shift.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I think that I understand what the short shift kit is but what is the "shift block"? Does it affect the length of the shift pattern? And from what I read they both can't be used together.



I would like the shift pattern to be tighter, not as long of a throw to the next gear. I don't think my shift pattern is sloppy but I would like less length to the next gear. I hope that this explains what I would like now can someone tell me which I need - short shift kit or shift block?



As you can tell I'm not really very clear on the tranny operation or terminology but I hope that I explained my confusion.

With the transmission in any gear, if you can move your shift knob from side to side (without shifting gears), that is the "slop" that gets removed with the addition of the shift block. It doesn't change the length of the throws, doesn't change the pattern, it just tightens it all up. For further clarification - the movement I'm talking about is inches, not millimeters.

the shift block does not affect the length of the pattern from stock - it only removes some of the slop by means of tightening up areas where worn or loose components allow it, and from what i understand, at the expense of a small amount of increased resistance - if you had very worn components, the pattern could get a bit smaller, becaseu it is larger than original anyway, but it would also decrease from replacing those components with new stock ones - the shift block is a nice solution to that at a lower price, and the better answer if you want to keep the stock shift pattern or do not want to increase shift effort

Thanks for the clarification. So, do I understand it correctly that the shift block attaches somewhere under the shifter while the short shift kit would attach to the linkage at the transaxle. Is the short shift kit something that can be installed by a novice while laying under the car or installed by a pro? Maybe a quick "how to do it" might be appropriate prior to purchasing the kit and would make decisions easier for some of us.

having never installed the shift block, i would not want to misdirect you - it looks to me like it also installs in the rear - i would call pete for exactly how that installs

I found my Short Shift Kit today and have already boxed it for shipment to Flash. He'll use it as the model from which he'll make all of you guys the Short Shift Kits you want.



Flash, if you make any changes or adjustments that materially improve on the original, please let me know. I am going to install it or one like it, finally, so I might as well use the better version if it is.

Does the 944 short shift kit fit the 968?



The 944 design is still available from a few places. Vertex (as someone else mentioned) has one made by the Schnell and I found a few places that sell the Weltmeister, which is what I had on my 944. The Schell is selling for $99 and I have seen the Weltmeister from $170-230.



If these kits will work why reinvent the wheel?

Can someone please post pics as to where and how we install the SSK?

Is this an easy DIY?

I am committed to doing this mod and want to see pics to get a better understanding of what goes where and what the new unit looks like compared to the OEM unit.

this is a pretty easy DIY - i will include instructions with every kit, and post them here as well, once i have written them - the ones that came with the kit were incomplete and actually for a different, albeit similar unit

The SSk replaces the part circled in the pic.

This is what connects the shift rod to the transmission.

It changes the geometry between the shift rod and input shaft to shorten the throw.
