[MCL968]

I have an early 1992, and the dash trim is wood, or a wood-like plastic. I see this on some cars of differing years, but I am not aware of an interior code which specified this option. Anyone know the story behind the seemingly random appearance of this trim?

Check your option codes. Rootwood interior options were called "exclusive" package options and they start with the letter X.

rumour has it that there is a teal colored cab out there with a linen interior and a factory wood dash.  i saw a picture of it about 10 years ago, but never have found the car.  there are a few cars out there that are not in the database.  i almost bought a car that is not supposed to exist at all according to the database.  the first 60 numbers were supposed to be held back, but the chassis for all of them was built in at least the first year, in anticipation of having to resubmit for further DOT crash testing and such. typically, if the testing is not required, or they don't use them all up, the manufacturer has a choice of destroying them, or selling them.  what do you think they did?

This may be something that came with the full leather seats. It has been in the car since new, and it's not something that was added over the original trim; it is the original trim.

Im curious about those 944 and 945 numbers too; mine has 968 310

About the other option codes:

I see no factory rootwood option,

CO2 = US emissions

331, AM/FM cassette (standard)

437, full power drivers seat

454, cruise control (standard)


That's a very striking interior you've got there MCL.I think the color of the wood makes an attractive transition between the black and white, a sort of 'fresh' or crisp look.

Thanks, according to Jeff it's an unusual combo. The light gray was not ordered often, especially in full leather, and rarely with the midnight blue metallic exterior. The trim may have been added at the dealership, and not at the factory, in order to make the sale.

there were a LOT of things added and changed at the arrival facility, prior to going to the dealership, especially in the later years.  after 11 years, i've seen a few.  these are still factory options, added by the factory, and many of the cars were even re-stickered, the work was just not done in germany.  unfortunately we do not have the details on that as yet, which probably makes jeff crazy because it sort of invalidates his database a bit.

It may be a kit from Jager Engineering. It shows on their website as an 85.5 - 944 part, but the 968 dash is the same...
