Airbag and ! light question
#1

Keep in mind I'm questioning the status of the 2 dash lights / indicators, one being the "air bag" light itself and the other being the big red "!" light.

After installing the 930S wheel and installing a 3 ohm resistor in the place of the plug should the "air bag" light stay on or should it go out? Does this light get turned out by the resistor in the plug or do you have to do it with the Bosch Hammer?

Another way to ask:

"air bag" light - is it turned off with the 3 ohm resistor or the Bosch Hammer?

I believe the "!" light will only go out by using the hammer.

Thanks

ugh - that should not have happened if you disconnected the battery first

if youahve not already, try disconnecting the battery for an hour

otherwise, i think it's hammer time (i can't believe i of all people actually just said that)

It's a hard code (safety) fault, thus requires resetting with the hammer.

Both times I had my 968 in the body shop for some paint work, the Air Bag and "!" light were on when I picked it up, and the trusty analog clock was the wrong time. I suspect they drained the battery by failing to heed my request to be sure the ignition switch was REALLY in the off position (sidebar: do you all have that problem too?). Both times my mechanic said the only thing to do was run diagnostics and use the special tool to reset the airbag. I'm assuming that happens anytime the battery's dead?

I finally printed up a card (and laminated it) that says "CAUTION: Please be sure the red light on the dash next to the gear indicator is off. If it's not, you'll drain the battery and we both really don't want that, do we? Thanks! "

I stuck it on the dashboard when it went into the upholstery shop and they laughed, but remembered to jiggle the key. Hope it works as well with valets?

Someone should do some laminated cards with instructions for the handout package in Hershey.

When I first got my car, the battery was being drained by my just-installed alarm system - but that never triggered the airbag light. Since then, I've been careful to disconnect the battery whenever doing work that requires removal of the steering wheel. I've only gotten the airbag fault light when I've had a "legitimate" airbag fault.

I think the key is disconnecting the battery before you work on the car and if the battery is dead, charge it instead of jump starting.

i agree the key to not having the light trip is disconnecting the battery first

the problem with jump starting is that most people don't do it right - aside from the risk of explosion of the gasses from the battery, you should not connect the negative end of the cable to the negative terminal on this car when the battery is dead, because of the way it is wired - this car has 10 ground points - this asks for electronics to suffer when you tie the ground to the battery and not the chassis

the correct method (after inspecting for damage) is:

1. connect positive of cable to positive of good battery

2. connect positive of cable to positive of dead battery

3. connect negative of cable to negative of good battery

4. connect negative of cable to GOOD CLEAN NON-PAINTED GROUND on chassis

using this car as the source battery is an equal risk

periodically checking and cleaning the ground points is a good preventative measure against problems

Bob,

I agree. That method will also keep you from knotting a hole in your battery from a spark.
