Seat switch question with several parts
#1

OK. Several parts to this question and yes, I have searched for answers. Driver's seat (rearward) switch that lowers the rear section of the seat goes up but not down. First guess is the switch is broken just because it seems to be a common issue. All the other switches make a "click" noise when depressed. This one makes the noise when you push it up but not when you push it down. Second reason I think it's the switch. I'm ok with a wrench and taking stuff apart but not so good at electrical stuff. Shoudl I verify this is the problem before I replace the switch? Anyone have instructions for dummies? I have a multi meter but really don't understand it.

Someone on here said they took the switch apart and rebuilt it? Is this a viable option? Easy or hard?

Seats are out of the car. Does the switch come out easy?

Finally, just got my Certificate of Authenticity for the car. It lists a power drivers seat as an option but not a power passenger seat. But the power options on both seats are the same? Manual slide with two 2-way power switches on both seats? If it is the same seat how come a power passenger seat is not listed as an option? If I have a power seat option did the car originally have the 4-way switches? Just wondering. -Tom

while rebuilding a switch can work, it really isn't the best option, as it will likely happen again

the switch should just pop in, though access to the rear of it to release it may be a bit of a pain

as for what the sticker says and what you have, it sounds like somebody swapped out the seats - what codes did you show?

How hard was it to remove the seat, and how long did it take you? I need to replace at least one of my switches as well.

Pulling the seats are easy, two elec plugs and 4 Allen head bolts. That's it.

Good to hear. The problem I'm having is that whenever I activate the front switch, the one that moves the seat fore and aft, the fuse blows quickly blows. A mechanic I trust tells me this behavior is usually the switch, and not the motor. I hope he's right...

when you go to remove the screws, just make sure the allen is FULLY seated - if you don't, you'll regret it in a hurry, and not be able to get your seat out

Thanks for the reminder. I'm usually very careful about that, as I know a stripped bolt head can really ruin an otherwise perfect day in a huge hurry, but an extra reminder never hurts!

If you have the patience the switches do come apart and can be reconditioned with silcone grease and 600 grit sanding. Watch out for the ball bearings and springs that want to fly out if you take one apart!

Anybody done a DIY on reconditioning these switches? My passenger seat switch isn't working in one of the directions. Seems this is a fairly common problem...would be very cool to have some photos and instructions for those that want to try it.

In another thread, Bombfactory (Austin) recommended spraying some WD40 on your non-functioning switches before you resort to taking things apart. I was a bit skeptical, but with nothing to lose, I gave it a try (love those free solutions). I'm going to have to continue testing it for quite some time before I declare victory, but it, at least for the time being, seems to have cured my problem with blowing the 30 amp fuse (#6) when I drove my drivers seat forward and back a few inches more than two or three times.

I pull the fuse, pushed in the switch in several directions, and gave it a good squirt deep into the switch from multiple angles. Then I exercised it about 20 times in all directions. Then I put the fuse back, and was able to drive it back and forth a good dozen times without blowing the fuse. So I repeated the procedure on all the other switches on both seats as a preventative. As I said, I'll keep testing it to confirm the fix is permanent (or as permanent as anything can be on a 19-year-old German GT).

Any idea what it might be about WD40 that appears to be helpful in this application? I thought it was just a light oil, but I hear it's also a very good solvent. Maybe it dissolved some of the gunk that built up in the switches over the years. In any event, I'd second Bombfactory's recommendation for anyone with seat switch problems to try this very simple, free possible fix.

Looked at the PET for a replacement rear switch (driver's) and did not see one, only full seats.

Is there a part number for the switch or do we have to rebuild them?

Have you tried the WD40 spray trick first? It seems to have worked for me...

WD40 works well. Did the trick for me; just be prepared to use quite a lot of it. Apply from all sides and exercise the switch while spraying; drown it!Repeat, then do it again.

A couple of rags below keeps the liquid from soaking the carpet.

Thanks!

i would use contact cleaner and not WD-40 - while the solvent will indeed clean things up, there is no reason to put any kind of lubricant into an electrical component - additionally the contact cleaner will evaporate and not stain the carpet

Just put a shot of WD-40 into the little hole on top of my non-functioning passenger seat switch...and whammo...it works! Seat now moves in both directions.
