Would you support american car companies?
#81

+1 on the list.

I'd be interested to know what kind of vehicles would result from a FIAT \Chrystler merger. When I was in Italy last year there seemed to be a real profusion of small fun to drive turbo diesel sedans including the Alfa that my brother had leased during the year that he lived there. The turbo diesel powered Lancias are drop dead gorgeous.

Hey, I had a Fiat 124 coupe, fun little car, but it would have been a lot more fun with a Chrysler engine in it
For that matter it would have helped if I had a 440 or a 340...or any Hemi in my Maserati Merak as well.
( yeah, I went trough a brief Italian car love period in the late 70s )

So there's the answer - Italian body design, German transmissions, American engines. Hydrogen powered. Problem solved.

Good article in last month's MT about this.

A link with a related story. http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_ne...ions/index.html

The immediate item of interest for both Fiat and Chrysler is the Fiat 500, for obvious reasons. They need to update the bumpers for the US standards, but other than that it is ready to go as is.

???

The article mentions that this is the car that will bring traffic to the show rooms. Based on looks alone, the 500 appears to be nothing special IMO. The Alfa Mito is nicer looking car.

Actually The entire Alfa line up is pretty nice. But I'm often bias when it comes to rare cars. The Brera for example is one hot hatchback.

I took the 'show room traffic' comment to mean that Chrysler doesn't have a real fuel miser car to get people in. Got to admit that the thing is weird looking. That might lure potential buyers to take a look.

50/50.
I was this close to looking into buying a Challenger. Then I saw how much it weighed

If I was buying a hybrid/electric car I'd give Toyota and Honda the finger and buy something american.

If there are any of you considering a Prius or Civic hybrid, look at the Chevy Volt. Once it officialy comes out I think it will trump the hybrids.

Rumor has it the Volt will cost around $40K. You'd have to be VERY patriotic, or have $10/gal gas, for that to pay off in less than about 50 years...

Car & Driver tested a Tesla this month. In writing about the car's instantaneous torque characteristic, they wrote one of the more descriptive lines I've read in awhile: "Burying the pedal has the same accererative immediacy as jumping in front of the 5:35 express."

Base price is $110,950, though, with the as-tested sticker hitting $126,595. At least there's no gas guzzler tax.

what a rip-off - 100 K ! to each his own, but I don't care how fast or how environment-saving that thing is, and even if they paid me 100k I wouldn't take it ! looks like one of those toy cars you'd give as a birthday gift to a 5 year old girl to drive around the cul-de-sac .
there are so many of them in this area ( co HQ is.. or was anyway..in the town where I live ) you can't swing a cat w/o hitting one - you see more of them than you see boxsters .

A few other Car & Driver quotes about the Tesla:

"As in an Elise, the Tesla's seats consist of little more than black paint on the firewall."

"We travelled only about 160 miles before total failure. Not of the battery pack but of our lower backs."

"Now that waterboarding is banned, may we suggest simply locking terrorists inside a Tesla."

Of course, all of these things could also be said of the Elise (Who cares?! The Elise is still my dream of a dedicated track car). I just thought they were funny. Overall, the Tesla seems to be an impressive feat of automotive engineering. If they could only get the price down (and the practicality up), Telsa may have something as gas prices undoubtedly escalate over the next few years. Maybe the Big 3 could learn a lesson or two from these guys.

So for me yes I would buy American, Ford first then Chevy, NO MORE Chrystlers!
I have had:

76' Ford Mustang (first car destroyed it)
80' Ford Thunderbird, cracked the head. (I was still kid and abused it)
87' Toyota pick up (no problems)
89' IROC (no problems)
91' IROC (no problems)
86' Porsche 944 (termostate only) sold with 160K to buy BMW
95' BMW 530i (no problems) sold with 180K and bought truck
98' Chevy Z71 (major front end suspension issues) traded after 50K
98' Isuzu Rodeo Wifes car (no problems)
99' Jeep Grand Cherokee Wifes car (AC compressor, ABS unit, CV joints, water pump) sold
97' Subaru Outback 225k Wifes car (no problems) sold
99' Ford F-150 4x4 (no problem) lease
01' Ford F-350 dually 4x4 (no problems) sold
06' Chrystler Pacifica Wifes car 85k NOTHING BUT A LEMON on its way out
01' Chevy 2500 truck 245k (brakes and water pump) daily driver till I get my Porsche 968 next week

I have a lot of cars trucks and over all been lucky. The Porsche 944 and the Bmw 530 had highest miles and least trouble. DO YOUR SCHEDULED MAINTANCE

Yeah, and you really feel it when rolling around corners and stopping. Not sure if the SRT is built different or not.

I can't vote because I am confused. What constitutes an 'American" car company???

The company has to owned by an American?
All the parts made and assembled here?
All the material sourced here?
All the money earned stays here?
A 75% 'made in America' car?
A 51% 'made in America' car?

Or are you buying American because someone says 'Ford' is American?

lol - true enough - i would go with where the company headquarters and primary business operations are located - i.e., chrysler, ford, gm, are here - toyota, nissan, hyundai, bmw, porsche, etc are elsewhere
