Fog Lights quit
#1

Well went out last weekend in the evening and my foglights are not working. The little green light is on.....but no lights. Switched the fuses with the horn which is right next to it.................no lights. Took the lights out and ran a tester on the socket on both sides............dead!!! I haven't tried to see if I have power leaving the switch yet..but if I do..I have no idea where to start looking for the problem. Any suggestions guys?

Be sure that the high beam lever is not set to high. That switches them off.

actually, you should have lights at both low and high beam positions - there are "fog" and "driving" lights - the fog lights come on in the low beam position, and the driving lights come on in the high beam position

check the relay G11

Also check the ground connections, these cars are notorious for having weak grounding of the electrical systems. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Is that the square relay in the fuse box? If so, its the one right next to the horn and the numbers are the same. I switched them and still nothing. Where would the ground be?

there should be a sheet glued to the lid of the fuse box that tells you which one is G11

there are multiple grounds in the car - not sure which one is common to both foglights - i would check the wiring diagram in the workshop manual

Well, I'm finally goingf to get around to this driving light thing. Not knowing how to read a schematic worth poop.........can anyone look at that thing and tell me which ground point would control the fog lights? Again, these are the lights that come on with the dashboard switch. The switch lights up................the lights don't. Both went out at the same time.

WEll, I kind of did that. The relay right next to it for the horn is the same number. The horn works, so I switched them and still no go.................

You could be right Flash....its been 3-4 months since I tried it. But the fact remains it still didn't work..................

horn fuse number 3
fog lights fuse number 5

not next to each other

horn relay G13
fog relay G11

not next to each other

take a correct known working relay and stick it in that spot - both relays are the same type - you should in fact have 4 of those in the box

i made this mistake not long ago when i was trying to track something down - i now have a big red dot on G12 so i won't plug anything in there

Well,

This is a bit crazy, but I should have caught it before. I went home last night and started from the beginning...turn on the lights.........THEY WORKED!! Switched them off and back on.........about a 2-3 second delay....and then they went on. Repeated tries gave different results from on immediatly to over 30 seconds to not at all. Finally, on one of the "not at all" try's, I wiggled the relay and they went on.........AH!! Probelm Solved!!!. Tried again .........no deal. Wiggled the fuse............BINGO!!! Pulled the fuse, cleaned off the prongs, reinserted and on-off 20 times without a hitch. Don't really know why the erratic behavior from a fuse............but something I should have tried from the beginning.

yeah - sounded like that kind of a problem - not sure why the switch lit up though

the contacts in this box get dirty - at least once every two years or so you should pull every fuse and relay and squirt some contact cleaner down there and hit the fuse and relay contacts with a wire brush or a cleaner soaked rag

anyway - glad it was simple

10-4 on that one Flash. Next rainy boring day when I'm standing in the garage on my 3rd or 4th Miller Light , I'm gonna do what you suggest and clean each fuse and relay. It was almost too easy..............
