Tail lights go off on braking!
#1

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

It is just the tail lights on the right side that goes off whenever i step on the foot brake..The left side works fine.

Check the bulbs first, sometimes the filaments will short out and cause strange problems.

When you say it "goes off" I guess you mean it does come on and then goes out??? I would also check the contacts in the bulb socket for corrosion.

After re-reading this I guess the tail light is going out when the brake light comes on. I think the brake lite has a higher current draw and if you had a bad or weak ground, this could cause the problem. Of course a short could be at fault as well, but I would track the ground first.

I believe the tail light is illuminated by the same bulb that should in theory become brighter when the foot brake is applied. However in my case, the bulb goes completely off instead of brighter.

I'll check the bulb socket contacts for a start.

Thanks for your inputs guys.

Just to add, the tail light comes back on when my foot is off the brakes..

Correct operation should be:

When tail lights are switched on and foot brake applied, the illuminated bulb should become brighter to signify a braking instance. However in my case, the bulb goes completely out instead when the foot brake is applied. And when foot brake is released, the light comes back on. And this is just happening on the right side.

I also would check the grounds first.  And switch the bulb with the one on the left side to exclude the bulb itself.

Ok so I pulled the tail lamps over the weekend. The bulb on the right side was smoked (milky looking) and the filament was broken. Clearly the bulb has blown. Put it a new bulb, didnt work. Swapped the bulb with the one on the left side and still didnt work. Changed the fuse and still without any luck. Guessing it is now down to the wiring?

No, grounds first, then switch.

It will be the ground connections as they flow from bulb holder to holder, carefully clean all bulb holder connections and the earth points on the boot floor under the carpet
