engine runs REALLY rough
#1

so the cars been running great! i take a little day trip with my friend out about an hr and a half. get there all is good, not running the car hard at all, a couple splurges here and there. have half a tank decide to fill up becuase gas was only $4!!! then get in car wont start. turning over trying to start, eventually it starts, running super rough have to be giving it gas to keep it running. we decide to try and make it home, as soon as the rpm's got over 3000 it was smooth and fine. make it home. i decide to start with the spark plugs, plug one is good, take plug two out and it is covered in oil, about a tablespoon drips off of it, there little bits of something on it, seem to be soft. whats going on?!? plugs 3 and 4 are fine as well.

The plug seals that go between th head and cam cover are more than likely leaking.

I just had the same problem. Its a very easy job to replace the valve/cam cover. But make sure you ck your cam sprockets!! Very Very Important!!! When I took my cover off I had found nearly all of my Exhaust cam sprocket teeth gone. Had to replace both cams and so I eneded up doing all my belts , rollers and seals. Runs like a champ now. The cams are a little difficult , dont know your mechanical backround but it wasn't an easy job.

Negative! I have the red beauty still. It needs nothing, has had over $6k of preventative maintenance and is still for sale. The car is fabulous! If anyone wants a no worries red/black cab PM me.

thanks you guys are awesome! i rebuilt an 83 944 so the cams shouldnt be too much of a problem. ive been needing to do the vario cam stuff anyways. i guess this is the push i needed haha.

also is there any possible damage that could have occured because i was forced to drive it home in this condition ?

I doubt any damage occurred. I would get those leaks cleared up and some new plugs and probably wires and see how it runs.

Cams are a little more tricky on the 968.

There should be a couple writes up's here to give you an idea on the procedure.

HI Flash,

I had bouht my red cab after selling my blue 968 some time ago in order to buy my blue Dodge Vipper.

After owning the Viper I realized how much I missed my 968 and had to have another one. I obviously looked for another Cobalt Blue 968 but when I couldnt find one I settled for the red one. So even today I still am looking for another Cobalt Blue Cab.

I had drove my red cab to Hershey, and noticed on my way home it was starting very rough so i checked my plugs and they were loaded with oil, which had brought me to my cams and realized I had a serious problem.

i pulled the cam cover today... the cams look good, but the chain guide is only about 1.5 long. is this how long it should be? also the gasket looked good, is there any indicators that these seals are the source of my problem?

The round seals in the spark plug holes should be soft and pliable, if they are hard then they should be replaced.
