A/C CLUTCH CAME APART
#1

Well, another saga with my new 968 coupe. This is the first hot day for the year here in Chicago. When my son switched on the air, it seemed to cool, but not particularly well. Certainly not as good as our 968 cab. Then, while my son was driving the car, he felt a shudder, and the A/C ceased to cool at all. We assumed that low freon might be the culprit, so we dropped the belly pan to get at the compressor to add a little freon. When we removed the cover, the outer portion of the clutch was found laying in the engine cover. Aplparently, the shaft nut had backed out and the outer portion of the clutch just came off the shaft. Thinking this was an easy fix, I reinstalled the clutch plate with a new woodruff key and nut, and when we started it up, there was still no air. We put the car up on our lift and I took a look at the clutch while my son activated the compressor from within the car. Well, the clutch did not engage.

So, I need some help in diagnosing this thing. If I have to replace the clutch, can I just buy the clutch? Or, will I be on the hook for the entire compressor? I guess that I am just in need of advice at this point. Oh, and we chaecked the fuses and they look fine for the compressor (unless there are more fuses than the one in the fuse box).

Maybe cheaper to pick up a used compressor.

I would just buy a Remanufactured one and recharge it and you should be good

I was hoping to just be able to buy a new clutch and install it, and not have to open up the refrigerant lines; however, it is difficult to get just the clutch. So, you are probbly right, and I'll end up replacing the compressor and have to rent a vacuum pump to evacuate the system. Also, if I replace the compressor, I'll have to install a new dryer as well.

It's been a week since my A/C clutch came apart and then refused to engage after we bolted it back on the compressor shaft. We took the outer disk of the clutch off t inspect everything, and really did not see anythiing that would give us a clue. However, we bolted it back together, and now the clutch engages. Any ideas of what might be going on? Unless I can sort this out, I just know that it will fail again on the hottest day of the summer!

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm kind of at a loss. Unless someone has an idea, I' m left with dropping the exhaust so that I can pull the clutch access cover to get a visual inspection of that area of the car. Not sure what I would see, but don't know what else to do.

Is one of the symptoms of a failing DMF flywheel such a rattle?
