Strange noise from engine compartment
#1

I had my mechanic do a smoke test on my 92 cab last weekend to (hopefully) sort out the gas smell.

The test showed nothing that could account for the strong gas smell. He did, however, find that the tube at the rear of the car where the carbon canister vents (between the gas tank and the spare tire well) was leaving gas stains on the outside of the gas tank.

Then, on the drive home, the car started making a "chug chug chug" sound, about 2 chugs a second, between around 1000 and 3500 rpm. Rate of "chugs" increases slightly as engine speed increases.

Engine runs fine, pulls strong, no miss or anything that would indicate something related to the operation of the engine. All gauge readings are normal.

During the smoke test, he checked the evap system, the carbon canister, and the purge line that goes into the manifold. The noise seems to be coming from that general area.

Any ideas? As much as I enjoy driving this car, I am beginning to think that getting it in shape is going to be a task similar to Hercules cleaning the Augean stables!

Popped off the top engine compartment cover and the problem was easily visible. The mechanic had not adequately tightened the hose that connects the vacuum valve to the evap canister, and the hose had popped off.

Hose replaced, clamp tightened, chug chug sound is gone.

And I thought you had the "Thomas the Train" option.....

Ha! No the original purchaser spent their extra money on other options, like a state of the art cassette player.

But I did learn that the solenoid valve that vents the carbon canister cycles on and off, and the frequency of the cycles increases with engine speed. Might be good to know down the road for other noises that have the same pattern.
