Engine cover P O R S C H E inlays
#81

My theory is that they stopped painting the cam cover and injector rail trim after 1993: photos of the later cars often show the discoloration. The paint used in the earlier cars is a kind of platinum metallic that's almost indistiguishable from metal in good condition.

I asked my high-end body shop if they could match this in a heat-resistant paint and they said no. I have never found anything close to it online, through Porsche or in stores. Most of the high-temp engine paints, even the Wurth stuff, are a purer, brighter aluminum color and don't have the very slightly golden tint that the factory parts had.

This picture shows a recently-painted intake manifold against the stock painted covers. I painted the manifold myself, actually dabbing it on from a spray can using mostly paper towels. I think you can see the color difference.

P.S.: I don't think Veronique would mind my mentioning that I have been talking with Jager about the plated cam cover bolts you see in the photo above... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I just noticed: if you go back to the Jager page I linked to at the top of this thread you'll see that, although the engine lettering is no longer listed for the 968 (presumably that will change once again), they have custom replacement "968" lettering available for the rear, and a nice trim piece for the B pillar (assuming that a 968 B pillar measures the same as a 944's, which might not be the case).

Jeff,

I painted mine in anticipation. After de-greasing the cover with 3M heavy duty cleaner and de-greaser, I painted it with WURTH silver paint and then coated it with WURTH clear. This paint is the German paint that Porsche uses on painted wheels.

I'm very happy. Clearance from the cover to the bar: a nickel will slide through with some resistance. Dimes and pennies are fine.

Silvy: did you wind up with a gloss finish? The wheel varnish is glossy: just curious.

Looks great! I might try the Wurth paint. My car is a '93. I didn't know that it was painted. My manifold looks great. It is really just the cover that needs touch up.

My dash trim kit is shipping from Jager now. So I'm anxious to install it. I may order the cover letters in the future after I paint the cover.

Silvy: I see that Wurth has an aluminum high heat paint. Is that the color you used?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find contact occurring with this installation as well. That ain't much room for the engine to move.

I have this bar on my sport and it makes contact! In fact it has worn part of the cover away. I have put 2 o rings onto the bar to stop it happening further!

Oooohh! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Clever! I'm going there.

I'm going to do a test painting on the previously unpainted cover, using the Wurth "High Heat Resistant Spray Paint": this cover is discolored and has significant wear from the bar. I'll report later on the color match.

that is clever - i used a velcro strap on one unit, but i like the o-ring idea

did you notice any vibrational change?

Wow. Did you just paint that since I posted? Maybe there is another paint company that has the right color. Anyone?

Maybe is better to try to clean it. I had read a thread in the UK forum, that they did not have much success with cleaning, though.

Has KLA changed the spec on their strut tower brace? Or does it still rub against the cover. I would like to get one for my car if it's not going to rub. Are there any other braces available?

Big Dave: The bolts are nickel-plated.

astrojeff: Yes, I did just paint the cover. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I had a can on hand. I bought it a year or so ago and had since forgotten why I didn't choose to use it when I retouched the intake manifold.

Silvy: you're using the Wurth wheel paint with Wurth clear spray over that... Is it glossy like the wheels?

Are you concerned about heat? How's the color match?

The decorative cover might not get that hot. But if you use the silver paint, it won't match the color of the cam cover.

Etnier,

Yes, the final coat is glossy. It has the exact same finish as the wheels. I used aluminum paint on the intake and the 2 pieces look great together. The color is nice as I do not have any painted pieces from the factory that seem to have a yellow tone. My 968 is a 1995. It has been about a week and the paint shows no sign of heat discoloration. I need to perk up the engine topside. I have found that a light touch with a wire brush works great, I just can't get down into the spark plug areas without some disassembly...when I change out the plug wires I'll clean up the rest of the engine.
