Door rubber trim
#1

The rubber trim pieces around the driver's door on my car have started to tear apart a little bit. It is actually the piece that is attached to the very bottom of the convertible top. When the top is up it is snug against the body, but as the top is put down it lies horizontal. I put the top up a few nights ago not paying attention and with how the rubber pieces happened to be I could not close the door all the way. I started putting the top down just slightly and tucked the rubber back underneath, but that is a hassle.

Has anyone else had this issue? If so, is it a difficult fix? Ideally it can be fixed indepently of more extensive convertible top work. Thanks in advance, and if I get a chance I will take a picture or two to illustrate the problem.

Just wait till you price that rubber!

I have not had that problem, but a picture would help me understand what is happening.

If it is the piece that I am thinking of it lies in a groove and can be slid back in.

Pics would help us.

Alright, here is a picture. The car is in the shop right now for an unrelated issue but I snapped one shot before I dropped it off. It is not a great shot but it shows the pieces I am talking about. This shot is from over my shoulder in the driver's seat. The top is down (obviously), and you can see the two pieces of trim that I am referring too. I see the groves they slide back into, but the real problem here is that rubber around the screws at the bottom has torn.

Is this something I can fix or I am better off just going to a convertible repair shop? Or can the dealer do it? The car is there right now for another reason, maybe they can knock it out.

Thanks again for the help.

How about a little Super Glue. I've used on loose pieces of rubber on my coupe (around the door).

That might work. I used Gorilla Glue to reconnect some pieces on the actual top of my Miata and I never had a problem again. I might have to give that a try.

Gorilla glue can be pretty good for that kind of thing. I glued my hood stops on with that stuff.

I think that should slide back in the groove. Take it all the way out and soap it up a litte and slide it back on from the end.

What I did was slip a piece of soft neoprene tubing into the hollow part of the trim...both directions...and used a glue that was really good (I forgot what I used, sorry..black is best) and closed the deck lid over the repair and fresh glue with wax paper between the deck lid and the repair. When it took set, I opened, pulled the wax paper out, and all was nice. I had to trim a little glue but that was OK. The tubing gave the broken part new strengh and held the ripped part in place. Cheaper and easier than new trim. I guess you could glue it and leave the hatch open for the glue to cure in place...then close the hatch. The latter approach may be better?

Worked for me but no guarantees.
