Tips on repairing broken door lock?
#1

The key has been unable to lock or unlock the drivers side door on my '92 for some time (it's a mostly-track car that's only driven on the street to get to and from the track, so I never lock it), and I decided to take a look at it today, but I can't see what is broken or disconnected. I see the lever with the accordion rubber seal to the right is supposed to move when the key is turned:

but I'm not seeing what's attached to it that is attached to the lock in the door handle. I can't even see how to remove the door handle, if this were part of the procedure to repair this problem. I'm sure broken door locks are getting to be common problems on these cars; has anybody here repaired one recently? I did a search, and one thread on a 944 forum said this is the piece that most commonly fails:

But I'm not even seeing anything that looks like this part with the panel off. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I found a very helpful video on how to do this repair on a late 944, but the same principles apply to the 968.  You have to remove the bolts securing the window regulator to the door, then tip the regulator with the glass forward enough to be able to remove the window guide at the back of the door.  Once this guide is out, you have access to the door lock mechanism.  Here's the video, in case anyone is interested:

In my case, the fix looks very simple - one of the plastic tabs attaching something important to something else equally important (I can't see what goes to what, and I don't want to tempt fate by taking the mechanism out if I don't have to).  I snapped it back on, and the lock seems to be working.  Hopefully another reason to pop the champagne tonight!
