Deep water vs. Electric fans
#1

Well, I went through what I thought was a not to deep puddle last night. It turned out to be deep enough to push a wave of water onto the hood.

I had to keep going through. When I got out of the puddle everything seemed to be fine...

This morning, on the way to work, traffic on the freeway slowed to a crawl. In the middle of the I-90 bridge over Lake Washington the warning light on the temp gauge and the warning light both came on. In a few seconds steam billows out from the hood on the driver's side.

I nursed it off of the freeway to a Goodyear station and started looking for the cause.

Both fan fuses were blown, must have been on when I played submarine.

I replaced the fuses, but still no fans. I pulled the fan relay and it looked fine.

Checked the connections to both fans and the thermosensor and all looked fine.

Since I replaced the thermo last summer I was suspicious of the fan relay.

I tried turning on the AC switch to try to force the fans on and they worked.

The car cooled off and was drivable again.

When I got to the office I turned off the AC switch and the fans stayed on, as they usually do, for a few seconds after I parked the car.

On the way home all was normal with the needle never getting past about 8 o'clock.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Fixes? I am inclined to replace the fan relay.

Wow that was a lot of water and you were very lucky not to suck it in the intake!

I believe it was RoxyLaura on 968.net who had the same thing happen with fan failure after driving through water.

Believe me, all I could think of while in the puddle was the four 2" holes in the air box!

It could be as simple as having things dry out and they function normally again. When wet or moist, they malfunction. Dry them out, all is well. It is the same advice you get when you drop your cell phone in the toilet!

As far as the air box ingesting water, think of what you had before: a narrow snorkel poised behind the bumper cover ready to suction anything in its path. Now the air box intake is protected behind the sheetmetal and has multiple vacuum breaker ports.

Brian,

Does looking at this make you feel any better

My only excuses were that is was a signed road and I thought that was the shallow path. Turns out there were 2' deep ruts in the puddle.

There was a lot of laughter when friends showed up to pull me out. All four wheels were in ruts not touching the ground, the truck was resting on the front skid plates.

I hope drying them out will get your fans going again. What about placing an electric blower heater under the hood overnight?

Hey- I read my cell phone manual and nowhere does it state that drying the phone out after submergence in a toilet will restore operation.... Gotta call Verizon and get the official party line on that one!! I do take calls while engaging in evacuation activities... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Sorry- couldn't help myself!

ON EDIT: If the fan relay isn't too expensive, might not be a bad idea to order one just in case...

Greimann:

Right you are, the snorkel would have been worse. Another reason to do the mod!

Bruce:

Sorry about the truck. Dried out over night and was fine ( I am crossing my fingers. All of us that drive 968's as daily drivers know why )

Bleeding and filling the coolant, once overheated and overflowed is another story. Ran it until the thermostat opened and opened the bleeder bolt and topped off... again. It seems to be doing better tonight.

Brian:

Sunset has the relay for $107.25

I am bidding on one on Ebay and watching another. If I can't get either I'll take Jeff up @ Sunset and keep the other for a "spare"???

Glad to hear your 968 dried out. The truck only needed a bath afterwards. And since I was laughing myself I guess I came out of it ok as well.

Do you know about using a radiator pressure tester to get the air out of your coolant? Clarks Garage has a writeup at http://clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/cool-02.htm and Autozone and most other parts stores will loan you a pressure tester. I found the procedure to work very well after changing my thermostat and HCV.

BRUCEWARD,

I'll investigate. I am installing the all metal AUDI heater valve and I'll need a trick device like that.
