Clutch vibration Thru the Pedal
#41

Hi guys,

I recently purchased a higher mileage 968 (currently has 117,000 miles (had 114,000 when I got it 6 weeks ago, haha), I too started noticing the notchy feeling coming through the clutch pedal, while the car is running. This started happening a few days ago. After reading the posts I came to the conclusion that I'm gonna need a new clutch. Unfortunately it won't be possible to do this for another couple weeks, maybe more.

Is this a sever problem that needs to be addressed right away? Or can I still drive the car for a little while longer?

To give you an idea of my commute, it's up and down hills through the city. Vancouver isn't the flattest city

Mine was not dangerous, just irritated the crap out of me. It also made it hard to drive in traffic and the hills of Seattle. I do not think that you are risking any huge problems.

All of the extra vibration may affect bearings in the torque tube as well as all of the other drive line parts that might not like being bounced around.

Hard call, but I'd have it looked at by your PM to see what really is going on. Just a notchy pedal may be something that can wait weeks, other items can not. Safety and not doing more damage should be the most important concerns.

Repairs rarely happen at a "good" time...by the way, when is it a good time to drop 1-2K in repairs on your 968?

Good Luck

Brian

Wow, thanks for the discussion and all the pictures Bruce, it really helps to understand what you are talking about. My 968 had the first clutch replaced by previous owner at 55K miles and the second one is still doing fine at 127K miles. I think his teenage daughter driving the car had a lot to do with the early failure. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Hmm, I don't know if I should be worried or relieved, but the notchy feeling seems to have subsided on it's own. It's still there, but very minimal. I heard that problems that fix themselves aren't necessarly a good thing. Gah, if work wasn't so busy at this time of year I would not hesitate to take it to the shop, but no can do untill the tail end of the week, and the shops aren't open on the weekends

However I do know that not all is well as I can feel the clutch "skipping" as I engage the gears, not the smooth slipping feeling you get with good clutches. I'm considering keeping the car in the garage and taking transite to work this upcoming week to prevent any potential damage from occuring.

Do a 2nd to 3rd shift and then a 3rd to 4th shift, both full throttle and bang those shifts off as fast as is reasonable. It it slips even a little, probably new clutch time.

If it doesn't slip at all, try flushing the hydraulic clutch system fluid, have the bushings in the pedal cluster eyeballed for wear, then try it again.

I tried that 2nd -> 3rd shift yesterday, and it felt pretty solid. I'll try it again today on my way home from work. So a slipping clutch would be if I rocketed the foot off the pedal, and the car didn't jerk forward as the clutch grabbed, but adusted to the difference in engine speed / gear speed more gradually.

OK, so that's some empirical evidence there. You may also want to get the clutch linkage inspected. I recently drove a 1995 coupe that behaved as you describe, with a grindy, knotchy feel as you pushed the clutch in. Is that the problem you are having? The mechanic at the shop said it was a problem with the linkage. On my car, I just had some of the pedal cluster bushings replaced as well.

Cheers,

Yeah, now all I need to do is jack up the car. Should I jack up the whole thing? Or is one side good enough? I don't want to put too much stress on the frame / body

Went to the mechanic today and he said that as long as the clutch isn't slipping (which it isn't) there isn't much to worry about. The notchy feeling is almost completely gone too. It's basically good for future DE events
