brake/clutch cylinder maint interval?
#1

What would you guys say is a reasonable interval? My car's 14 years old now - I know flash says "replace all the rubber... period" and he's probably right.

But let's say I just replace the pressure hose out of the master clutch cylinder... what about the brake and clutch cylinders themselves... go ahead a switch 'em out to be safe? Or would that be a waste of resources? I seem to recall 944 people saying their cylinder was prone to failure.

Thanks all.

Most master cylinder failures are due to moisture in the fluid. Brake fluid absorbs water and over time, this can corrode components in the master cylinder. For a street car, you should replace the fluid every two years. For a track car, you should replace in annually. If this has not been done (and very few street cars have had this done) then you are probably living on borrowed time.

My car had significant issues with the brake fluid when I purchased it that caused the calipers to be rebuilt. I did not change any of the master or slave cylinders.

I have not seen any master or slave cylinder problem in the 6K miles since.

If reliability is a big issue it might be worth while to change the clutch master and slave before they fail. Rebuild kits are available as well.

I have never heard of a brake master cylinder failing, has anyone?

there have been at least 2 in the last year among members that have come forward and said so, and at least 3 times that many slave cylinders

a lot less common that with british stuff for sure (they use live rubber seals), but still subject to the same problems

Are you referring to clutch master cylinder failures or brake master cylinder failures?
