batwing (front apron) installation
#1

Got a new batwing (front apron)  from Sunset and the attachment hardware from ArnnWorx... I figured it would be intuitive as to how to mount the batwing (front apron), but the attachment of the wing to the belly pan in the photos from ArnnWorx does not make sense

There does not be anyplace to attach a bracket the lines up with the holes in the belly pan... sorry about being dense, but what am I missing?

Youre yellow oval is close in the pic. Try the three recessed holes, one is right next to your yellow oval.

Three screws go thru the black belly pan and into the bottom of the radiator housing (?) i think

This might help... Look carefully where the brackets go. No brackets are used for the belly pan, they are only used for the batwing. The belly pan is attached to the batwing using 3 screws in the recessed holes. The bellypan is indeed "sandwiched" between the radiator housing (or support or whatever) and the batwing.

I do have the 3 bolts the go through recessed hole and the belly pan attached...

but from the photos it looks like there should be some brackets the attach the leading edge of the batwing to the belly pan as well

Maybe the part labeled "45" ....although, there are not mounting holes on the batwing for it

That's strange... I just checked mine. It has the holes there just as the drawing suggests.

I've had 2 968s and 2 89 944 turbos and none have had the brackets you are referring to.  I wonder if it was an 86-88 thing they got rid of... You likely can't find an easy attachment point as it doesn't exist on your car.  They should be attached to the rivets on the batwing (front apron) according to the pics on the Arnnworx site.

Hmm, if i may try to clear up some confusion: Having purchased the authentic hardware from porsche last year when i replaced with a new batwing, the bracket #45 helps hold the batwing in place by connecting to a point above it with the help of the "speed nuts" shown in the parts diagram (as does the similar small bracket for the other side), but they are both lateral to the black belly pan and dont touch it. And nothing OEM touches those rivets, they only fasten the metal reinforcement to the otherwise floppy rear edge of the batwing.

there are little brackets that attach the two side vent covers (that were deleted in later years).  they are often missing on cars, because the mechanic removed them and did not reinstall them.

I installed that batwing a few months ago and ordered every bracket, nut and so forth from Porsche. I used every part on the drawing. Like Flash says, maybe there are other pieces missing or deleted.

When I will be working on my clutch, motor mounts etc, and the car is on the lift again, I will try to take some pics of the brackets and where they attach to. At least, if the mistery isn't solved by then.

OK then, the picture AW is problaby and 944, and the batwing has changed since then... as MLB says  "floppy rear edge of the batwing" is what I have, but the batwing feels pretty damn secure with all the bolts/speed nuts in.

Bulti, if you think about while you under your car, please do take some pics... just like to verify, for my own peace of mind the batwing is on correctly Smile

Thanks everyone!

Pics will follow, but I need my parts first. Could take at least two weeks.

As long as you don't see a trail of stuff falling off your car in the rear view mirror, you're ok :-)

I have the side vent covers, but don't have anything on the trailing edge of the batwing.  I'm tempted by the ArnnWorks kit though as it looks like a well thought through execution of attaching the batwing.  Of course, what I really need to do is just install my splitter...

Just an FYI.. since the  ArnnWorx kit didn't include a pair of the brackets (944 doesn't need them?). I order the Porsche brackets and a few of the screws/speed nuts from Porsche just to compare....

btw.. I can't seem to attach images directly anymore. I must add to a gallery first.  Is this normal?

There are a few different types of front aprons. The 944's is different from ours, and maybe the 944 has even 2 versions.
