I would be removing the airbags, go with a CS wheel, and get rid of the passenger one, I really don't like the idea of a 30 year old unexploded bomb right in front of my face or my passengers, glad my car does not have any airbags at all

That’s not a bad idea ..not to mention that I like the look of the CS steering wheel better .   BUT,  it’s illegal to remove air bags or any other OE safety devices , here in California .  No shop is willing to perform the job.   I looked into that many years ago and was turned down by everyone I approached.

From the searches I’ve done on our airbags, it does not seem that the 968s have used the notorious Takata airbags .  Does anyone here have information that contradicts that ?     I presume that’s the case, otherwise the 968 would have been part of the recall .. 51 million vehicles recalled because they had Takata ..

Confirmed, Porsche does not use Takata airbags.

Awesome, thanks Jay.   !     Both BMW ( some models ) and Mercedes ( some models ) did, so thought I should double check .

Still, any 30 year old airbag is not 100% safe, but better than Takata I suppose ..

One could simply disconnect the wiring to the airbag and live with a piece of black electrical tape over the light..

Visited and called five Porsche specialists shops within a 50 miles radius of where I live .  Not a single one ( including a Porsche dealer , which has a classic and older cars service segment )  have the instrumentation needed to accurately diagnose the air bags fault .  They all said 30 years is too old for any systems and tools they have for diagnosis .  And they are hesitant to throw parts at it based on a Durametric indication , which they claim is not perfect ; if the Durametric indicates it’s the module, it’s not necessarily the unit itself , it could also be any one of the four sensors going to it that failed, a contact that got loose and not firmly seated, etc , etc .  According to them Durametric will not identify any fault with one of those , it will only show the end result of the component affected , which is the module .   A they are hesitant to start throwing parts at something they’re not certain of, even if I ask them to do it  Translation to all of this :   I’m screwed .

I don’t suppose that behind the VDO there is mini LED light right behind the  display which could be disconnected, or a wire going only to that particular light that can be pulled out ?    I have a suspicion all those lights are integrated into a circuit board and the only connection so to that board , so nothing can be individually tinkered with ?   A shop won’t do it , but I can probably rims a shady tree mechanic willing to do that for me.  If it’s possible, that is ..

Yes, one ! light for abs, airbag, oil level etc. If there is a fault in any of these systems it wil trigger the !light. If you can find a electrical plan of the instrumentpanel, share it and we can find a solutions that will work out. I can imagine that perhaps you will have interrupted connection between the cluster and the airbagcontrolunit and not in the closed systeem of the controlunit with the two airbag and sensors. Perhaps even a groundproblem from the unit.

Sounds goofy but have you tried smacking the airbag?

It worked for me for a while. Now it just takes a few miles or a stop and restart.....

I’ll search online for a workshop manual, they might have that schematic in there .

This still puzzles the heck out of me .. this entire week , the pattern was :  start the car, drive off, light stays on for 15-20 minutes then goes off.   Second start of the day, the light stays on for about 5 minutes, then trumps off . Third start of the day it says on maybe 1-2 minutes than goes off.   The following day the pattern repeats itself .     Defies logic as to what what it could possibly cause that kind of a sporadic, but consistent from one day to the next pattern .

The Fonzie jukebox method didn’t do anything , by the way ..

Ah well it was worth a shot when nothing else works.

I think my biggest problem is I just don't drive the car. I think it's destined to be forever young....

Seems a pausible signal from the airbagunit to the instrumentcluster. Probably the airbagunits wil work correctly but can not give the instrumentcluster a good signal to shut off the airbaglight that as a result shut of the !light. I should check the wireloom from the cluster to the airbagunit.

What needs to be removed to get access to the wire loom ?    I presume the loom splits into two segments , each going to one of the two air bags ?

You might have to start with the tires taking everything apart until yo find it.
