Advice needed: budget racing suspension
#1

The buyer of my old car has been bitten by the track bug. It's got over 200 000 miles on it so the car will be a budget project. With US prices it is logical to look "over the pond" for gear. The setup would be pure track with 800 lb springs forward and 1000 lb springs at the rear. Any proposals for budget gear? KW, Leda etc with would be the typical choice here for a car like this is over the budget.

Bilsteins seem to be a popular choice,

are they adjustable and up to these sorts of spring rates?

Those spring rates may be a bit much for the Bilsteins. You could either come down on the spring rates a bit or have the the shocks revalved. They are not adjustable. The cheapest would be to find some used bilsteins and have them rebuilt/revalved. Bilstein offers this service. Provide them the specs of the car and the desired spring rates and they will set them up for you. I think I paid ~400 for this and that included changing the rear bushings to spherical bearings.

I think my friend can stretch to the standard Bilsteins, what do you think would be the max they would handle without revalving? Spring rates in the range I suggest might not be a good idea since you are then into the next round changing arbs etc...

And Erik: how much do you run?

Thanks in advance!

I ran 650f/800r on revalved Bilsteins, have since gone to Motons. I ran 550f/700r on the standard valving. I felt it was getting toward the limit of what they could handle. They were also getting old so I had them rebuilt and revalved at the same time.
