Elephant Racing vs. Racers Edge bushings?
#1

I'm planning to replace all my stock bushings with spherical metal sealed monoballs for the front control arm, and polybronze for the rear spring plates, and from the descriptions, the products sold my Elephant Racing and Racer's Edge look virtually identical. Plus, their prices are the same. Is there any advantage of one over the other? Any personal experiences/preferences? Thanks.

Cloud,

It will be another two weeks of so until the car is back together and then I can let you know about the Racers Edge suspension components.

I have all Racers Edge suspension parts on my car, with the exception of Elephant Racing polybronze rear bushings and front bump steer brackets. No issue with the quality of products from either vendor, although the bump steer brackets from ER did require some machining to fit properly. I broke one in the process but it was replaced for me free of charge very quickly.

I can say that in terms of customer service, reliability and continual willingness to help with knowledgeable advice which has extended far beyond supporting the products he has sold me, Karl at Racer's Edge has been excellent over a three year period.

The positive comments about Racers Edge are good to hear. What exactly are bump steer brackets, by the way? Are they known by another name? Thanks.

It's called an "adjustable bump steer kit" you can find it at the ER site. Basically just some premade spacers to drop your tie rod end on a lowered car.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks.

So is it fair to say there is no real difference in quality or performance between the Racers Edge and the Elephant Racing monoballs and polybronze spring plates? If this is the case, I will go with Racers Edge, since RS Barn carries them, and I like to support RS Barn as much as I can. Any proponents of Elephant Racing over Racers Edge out there, and if so, why? Thanks.

they actually carry both, but i think pete prefers the racer's edge - there have been a couple of castor blocks from elephant that have had to be serviced (including one of mine)

i also wish somebody somewhere had said something about the change from version 1 to version 2 on the polybronze bushings - it could have saved me 3 years of squeaking

Flash,

Sorry about your experience, and thanks for weighing in. So it sounds like Racer's Edge would be a good choice.

i'm not sure what the issue is exactly, nor am i slagging the product - the problems have not been frequent, and by the vast majority their products have been completely satisfactory

Understood. I believe both are excellent products; I'm just trying to see if there is anything that differentiates them, as I only saw Racers Edge on RS Barn's site, but if they carry both, then that even eliminates my desire to buy from RS Barn as a differentiating factor. I'll add it to the long list of things I plan to discuss with Pete.

Ok, so my story with Elephant Racing castor blocks is I bought a set, and then waited several months to put them on. During this time I heard more than one case of these bearings making popping/creaking sounds. So I called Elephant Racing and asked whether they thought I would have a similar issue with my units. They said that there was almost no chance that I would have any problem and that a certain shop was the only case they had heard of so far. I installed the castor blocks and they creaked like hell, basically unbearable to drive. I called Elephant Racing and asked them to replace the unit. The best they would do was give me a new bearing unit so I had to remove the castor blocks, disassemble them, replace the internal bearing, and reinstall them on the car. Also they only gave me one of the bearings, I had to purchase the other bearing. So, a couple months down the road, one of the bearings is now creaking and popping again.

This has been a big pain, and I am tired of dealing with it. If it was a race car, I probably wouldn't care if it made sound, but in retrospect, I wish I had not put these on the car. I don't know if other people have experienced similar issues with either brand, but I have.

that sucks - i am bummed about this, as you likely got them at my recommendation - that being said, i have had one fail too - i don't know what the problem is, but it seems like this may not be the best product

the bigger issue to me than the noise is the failure of the vendor to deal with it properly - this is not the first time i have heard of this - that is not what we want

My Elephant Racing castor blocks are creaking and popping, have been since day one. I will be having them replaced and will probably not use that brand again. Too much hassle when you only have limited time to do it.

Can't comment on Elephant Racing Customer Service, because I went through RS Barn and they will handle the replacement parts from the vendor. Still a PITA to do something twice.

mine have never creaked or popped, or made any noise at all - i found the play in one of them totally by accident - i had the car in the air, and was just giving it a once-over, which entails grabbing everything and giving it a good wiggle - i found a little play in one of the bearings

Im running poly on the rear in my 951 from lindsey. Theyre kinda noisy, not too bad. To me any way. Figured it might be worth mentioning considering peoples experience with ER.

No worries Flash, I really appreciate all you do for us 968ers. It seems like it's simply a quality issue with the bearing component, which is something they are probably just sourcing and putting into their CNC machined castor block housing. It's probably difficult to understand when a production issue is a problem with the small quantities they would sell. If they weren't making all this noise I'd be saying "They are great, and really well made" so I don't want to complain too loud. I'd just rather do something new on the car when I work on it instead of doing the same job for a third time.

Cheers

Agree with 968TDG that there are issues with Elephant Racing control arm rear monoballs. Just had mine (tired OEM ones) replaced with Elephant units and there is a terrible creaking/popping sound. People usually tell you that this is normal as Elephant blocks are "racing" items. Believe me it is not, because I've driven a couple of race cars with really tight suspensions featuring monoballs, rose joints, etc and there was no issue with unusual sounds generated by the suspension. In my case the creaking sound is so loud that you expect the arm to fall apart. The sound is present even when a car is driven on a silk smooth highway. I believe the problem may be a faulty bearing inside the monoball. The interesting thing is that only driver's side monoball appears to generate that unbearable creaking sound, passenger's side seems to be silent.

I'll be swapping Elephant items to the OEM rubber-metal items by the end of the week and will contact Elephant Racing asking to replace driver's side unit. We'll see what they have to say. It is a shame actually, as ER items look as real quality pieces.

Has anybody experienced this type of noise with the Racers Edge rear monoballs?
