Better street suspension set up
#1

It's time to work on suspension improvements. Got to have everything up to date for next summers gathering. My car is a street car, won't be tracked in a serious manner, but there are some pretty awesome twistes here. Key goal is to make handling better while keeping my wife happy with the ride, not much firmer, less body roll and understeer won't bother her but i cant go much firmer on the ride. Was looking at Club Sport springs but I only have about 1/2 inch than I can lower the car without scraping on my steep driveway. CS springs drop the car slightly over 3/4 inches, but have the same spring rate as stock, which would be good for the ride. Also running on 22 year old shocks and I'm sure they could be refreshed with great improvements. There appear to be several coil over solutions that would allow a little lowering combined with better shocks. I'm also looking at M030 front and rear bars to reduce body roll. I've been reading the earlier conversations on gas vs hydraulic shocks, spring rates, etc. Got to keep it affordable. So, that's a long intro to getting suggestions from smarter people than me.

I put in a set of koni adjustable shock's witm the M030 front and rear bars .

And went from the Original 16inch wheels to the optional 17inch 993 type wheels to have a bit more rubber , since i have sc of flash installed .

Used Flash his mild improvment to stock setup for the allingment .

And theTower strut brace from flash .

Didn't do anything to the ride height , drove a few cs's over the years and other lowerd 968's , way less comfortable in my oppinion , and handeling wise not a lot better for a street car .

Track car different story , i would lower it etc .

Very happy with the way car handels now , we go out for a drive now an then with a couple of 911's  , and they have no trouble staying on my tail until it gets really twisty .

Off course they are no good drivers , but never the less they are amazed how fast the 968 is and  have to let off  when it really start's to get twisty .

The thing i like the most is that the car will start to slide on all 4 wheels  when you drive it on the edge and you feel it comming , and i can still get it go where i want it  with a little power more or less ,all very predictable , for me at least .

But since i only drive thecar on the public roads , we are talking a few miles a year of this spiriting driving , the rest is just coasting along , so no need for a more firm  ride .

Sliding the car is one of the joys of driving the 968. The car certainly tells you when and then it's up to you. Do you have limited slip?

I have not had the opportunity to try to slide the car without it. Since that car is a street car I'm somewhat reluctant to try it. The track car does have lsd and is a blast to use sliding to rotate the car. Of course I can only do that without the Hoosiers. They sort of hop instead of sliding. I suspect the hop is right before a full blown difficult to control slide occurs. Next weekend I have an event where I suspect the temps will require me to take the Hoosiers off and put the toyo's on. So I'm looking forward to fooling around with rotation/sliding.

lots of options when it comes to suspensions.  you really have to set a budget though, because the costs are all over the map.

I am very happy with all aspects of the set up I have in my blue car but you'd have to ask flash what's in there, assuming his memory still serves him , lol, or he can find the records of what was installed. However, it has been lowered by about 1.25" , I believe I have 250 lbs springs in the front over Koni adjustable shocks ( but you have to cut / customize the the OR outer strut casing ) , and 90 lbs springs in the back over adjustable shocks as well ( I dont remember the brand - KLA maybe ? ) , I have the M030 bars front and back and I think that's about it.. Oh, and the D1R bottom cross brace . I have both the front and rear shocks set right at the middle point of the adjustable scale..

I do have the D1R shock tower brace and front steering brace installed (new castor block) and the modest alignment specs Flash published a while back, all that helped a lot. Been checking around on parts and I can get the F/R M030 sway bars from my local Porsche dealer for around $700 with taxes incl the rubber bushings. Paragon has them for about the same, haven't priced Lindsey yet but expect about the same. Paragon has Hypercoil front adjustable coilover kits at 200# springs (close to stock) so I wouldn't have to change the rears (just lowering); helper springs,  Koni Yellow Sport adjustables front/rear all for around $1,000.  Need to modify the stock strut housing but that looks not too hard.Throw in a new alignment. Maybe get this all done for under $2k. My financial controller (wife) is willing to let me spend that much and maybe a little more (have to save room for the RSBarn catback exhaust). So, long way to answer Flash's question on budget - under $2500 to make it the super-handling street car it can be.

I would suggest a call to Pete of RS Barn. The car that I purchased from him which was a M03) LSD car had all sorts of suspension modifications, as well as Turbo brakes etc. As he has the parts and can sell them to you, he also has the knowledge of what is best to do or not to do.

i have had to straighten out a few suspensions he set up, as the owners of the car were not as track oriented as he is, and consequently did not like the harsh ride of the components he tends to choose.

i am a big fan of QA-1 double adjustable shocks on the rear of this car.  they are far more adjustable, and most importantly, they are hydraulic.  this takes away all of the jittery nature of  gas shocks like koni and bilstein.  they also allow you to add springs in the rear, if you so choose.

Flash, what do you use on the fronts with QA-1 rears?  Do you use their coil-over systems? They look primarily like an American car product, at least that is all the models they list on their web site. Do I have to change the badging on my car? Big Grin No dealer in AZ but I'm sure they can be shipped.

koni yellows are the budget setup, and the best bang for the buck, as long as you aren't going over 300# on the spring.

i have them on the rear, with a stacked spring setup.  i have installed them on a number of cars, including ones that had bilsteins, and the results have all been positive.

you can get the shocks from summit.  i'd actually have to look up the specific number.  all you have to do is order them with the bearing at the bottom, and the poly bushing at the top, and then get a 12mm sleeve bushing for it.  it's best to send them to naake to be re-valved, but they will work as shipped if you don't get too nutty on spring rate.

Tongue Only had 3 spins this weekend at autocrss...was a very high speed course. This was after braking and turn-in from ~70mph trying to hold a bit too much speed...I usually make it 3/4 of the way around by gassing in until i'm fully backwards, this time made it all the way around so popped right back into first and kept going! The funny thing is - this run was only 4.5s (66.2s) slower than my best run (61.7s).

I think I saw Steve McQueen do that move in Bullitt.  Nice recovery.

Neat how your rear end came up for a second. That must have felt different!

Flash, I wasn't thinking about adding springs at the rear, just leaving the torsion bar but adding M030 stabilizer bar.  Will the QA-1 work in that application? Do you use QA-1's in the front as well with coilover? Will be adding M030 stabilizer bar in the front as well.

you can add spring in the rear with no issues, depending on the ride height desired.

the QA-1 shocks will have no problem with the M030 swaybars

they don't make a strut.  i am using koni double adjustable hydraulic struts with a stacked spring setup that results in a progressive spring from 150 to 300.  this provides a very smooth ride, but firms up very nicely when i ask it to, and does not have the jittery issues of gas units.  not cheap, but definitely the best street setup i've experienced.
